Points well taken. I regret that my OP gives off the impression that the melodies and structure of Pavement songs lack sophistication and nuance. There's something I'm trying to say here about wildness and unpredictability versus stability and getting to the point. Don't quite know how to phrase it, I guess.

The best word I can find for both the playing and recording of the early Pavement stuff is sloppy. It's endearing at times, other times less so. But then somewhere along the way Malkmus became a wicked guitar player, and the recording and mixing got much better.
