Having just discovered how to rip audio from youtube files, I'm now stuck with one track that is super long. Anyone have any pointers on how to split this up into individual tracks?

You can do it in Audacity. Just cut the parts you don't want and export the shortened section as a new MP3.

Doing that re encodes though so you have a lossy reproduction of an already lossy file.

Uh...no. You can't edit an MP3 without re-encoding it again. You have to extract the audio in WAV, split the tracks apart with CDWav or something similar, and then make MP3's from that.

The Audacity way still works. If the starting point is a YouTube rip, I think you guys are overthinking this.

So you're taking something crappy and making it sound twice as crappy. Makes sense.

He's right about this. Encoding to mp3 from a good source at a good bitrate is no big deal, but re encoding an mp3 from a lossy youtube rip is going to sound like crap.

I've ripped concerts from youtube videos that sounded excellent...better than an FM broadcast anyway. But that's because I did everything in WAV, rather than re-encoding an MP3 four times.
