I liked the idea of Sonic Highways, but watching the episodes and then seeing the "video" for each song with the trite lyrics right there on the screen made it so hokey.
The first three albums (especially Colour) are great. After that they're more of a "I like the singles" kind of band.
I haven't listened to the Foo Fighters in a while. Do they still sound like they are borderline cock rock?
Much less so than I expected
But you've missed some pretty awful records. This new song is a big step up from Sonic Highways, and Echoes... was rubbish too.
Everything after the first three records is garbage with the exception of Wasting Light and maybe One by One. Even those two are just mostly tolerable with just a few good tracks mixed in.

Randomly thought of the Foo Fighters song "Aurora" today, and how much I liked it. Then I looked at the tracklist for that third album and found a whole bunch of songs that I really enjoy-- "Live-in Skin", "MIA", "Generator", "Headwires". I should revisit that album. I remember it having a cool, laid-back, New Wave-y kind of sound that's unlike anything else they ever did.

I've done this more than a few times with their second album. "My Poor Brain", "See You", "Enough Space", "Up In Arms" (the solo always sounded like scene interlude music for Saved By The Bell, but in a good way.)
