We all do. We know he watched the emperor and Vader and the empire rose and fall. But from close up or a great remove? One of the cooler theories is that Snoke is who the emperor was looking for in the outer reaches of space beyond the galaxy. That's where he had thrawn etc searching.
Could be they go the yoda route and just don't explain at all

We do? How?
He tells kylo this in the force awakens novelisation.
Fail. I hate it when shit like this happens. If it's important, it needs to be in the fucking movie.
There isn't a whole lot extra in the novel really. Just this and Rey hearing a voice telling her to kill kylo during their duel. It's never explained whose voice. Probably snoke looking to replace him with her.

Now that I think about it. Him telling kylo Vader failed and the empire failed cos of vaders compasison kind of clashes with Kylos adoration of Vader. So maybe he's worshipping Vader in secret?
Nope. They expand and often change things from the movies. I primary example is in the novelization of A New Hope: Luke is said to be Blue 5 instead of Red 5 during the attack on the Death Star. Because the movie is canon, the book cannot be because the book contradicts the canon. This is just one small example but it is known that the novelizations are not official canon.
