Lately I've been listening to Thurston's first solo album, Psychic Hearts. This album is in a league of it's own, as far as I'm concerned.

Chelsea Light Moving – self-titled debut album coming March 5 + U.S. Tour Dates

Image

On March 5 (March 4 in Europe), Matador will be releasing Chelsea Light Moving’s eponymous 1st full-length LP/CD/digital album. Until this point, the Thurston Moore-spearheaded quartet (see the bio below) have dropped periodic MP3′s on the unsuspecting populace, along with road testing their live show in locations as far flung as Gothenberg, Sweden and Denver, CO. Their first U.S. tour commences Sat., March 2, at Hoboken, NJ’s Maxwell’s.

Image

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING is the current group led by Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore. He is the songwriter and plays over-amped hyper electric guitar and sings with raw-glam-destructo vocals. The band is a four piece featuring Samara Lubelski, who has played violin with TM on his last two solo LPs (Demolished Thoughts and Trees Outside The Academy) and with CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING plays deep psyche pop metal bass guitar. Keith Wood, who records under the aegis Hush Arbors, plays electric guitar with a pick forged from angel wing and John Moloney, aka “Pegasus”, approaches the drums like an asteroid hurtling toward Earth. The first CD self-titled was recorded in two spurious sessions with engineer Justin Pizzoferrato in Sone Lab, a killer studio in Easthampton MASSACHUSETTS. The band is ready to detonate any birthday party, wedding or hullaboo in any country, planet or stratosphere that doesn’t support right wing extremist NRA sucking bozo-ology.

“I gave Sonic Youth a 0.0 rating on Pitchfork.”
By Brent DiCrescenzo, Music

As a music critic, I have been challenged to a boxing match with a publicist, promised a black eye from an indie rocker and threatened with a libel lawsuit. Death threats have popped up in my in-box. A German goth wrote me, “Your god is dead.” And yet, I don’t regret any of the record reviews (yes, record reviews) that prompted those reactions.

But one of the 500 or so rambling pieces I wrote as a Pitchfork brat still sticks in my craw. In 1999, I moved to Chicago from Atlanta with my buddy and Pitchfork founder to make the music website a semilegitimate media outlet. I also grew a chip on my shoulder about living in the Midwest, not New York. Around the same time, some thug broke into Sonic Youth’s touring van and stole all its gear. The iconic Gotham band, always one of my favorites, responded by buying new equipment and recording NYC Ghosts & Flowers, an album of pointilist, tuneless, beatnik street jazz. It couldn’t have been more Manhattan art scene had it been Jean-Michel Basquiat reading slam poetry over John Zorn’s ringtones. Come to think of it, that’s basically what it sounds like. I hated its clichéd New Yorkishness. So I ripped it a new one, deeming it a 0.0 on our knowingly silly, arbitrary decimal scale.

A decade later, I was on the phone with Thurston Moore, SY’s guitarist and singer, for a Time Out Interview. I mentioned that the Rolling Stones’ maligned Emotional Rescue reminded me of his group’s guitar interplay. He recalled that being the only cassette he owned while living in some dingy apartment in New York in the late ’70s. So, hey, we’re hitting it off. He’s a friendly guy. Why not bury the hatchet?

“Do you remember that cranky adolescent who gave your record a zero rating?” I asked. “Er, yeah, that was me.” He laughed. Thank goodness, he laughed.

“We loved that review! That was great!” Moore said. I apologized and told him that I now love the record. It’s unlike anything else, eerie and beautiful. The fiftysomething eternal punk told me never to be sorry for the nonsense I typed. No, the lesson here is: Beware the opinions of a kid right out of college.

This is immensely great.

No, he (infamously) didn't like when he used to write for Pitchfork, but now admits he was a dork and that it's a really great record.

That review was a pretty big deal for a while there. People still bring it up.

Wait, what does this have to do with hipsters? Do you guys even know what hipsters are? Do they even exist, except in the minds of thirty-something music fans who listened to lots of 90s rock music?

It was an edit of a post and I used to be quite vocal about hipsters and I'm not sure that it matters anymore and its just a nostalgia poke and holy shit you used to be more legit.

Yeah.

It's subjective enough what constitutes one, I suppose, but the term has been around since the jazz age.

There are a lot of generalizations in there (some of which seem laughably out of touch, even to me), but more than a few nuggets of truth as well.

Oh, I know, I was being facetious; it's just a mystery to me exactly why people find hipsters (or the idea of hipsters) so maddening.

I think it's more that people find arrogance and condescension maddening, and people make the (sometimes accurate, sometimes not) connection between those traits and the culture. I've certainly been guilty of that. I have worked to overcome it.
