Good news. Lots of it
By: Benjamin Hart
In case you haven't heard, this is absolutely the best time ever to be a Star Wars fan. Apart from all the amazing content on television and in books and comics, we also have a new feature film to look forward to every year. While the we currently have Rogue One and the Han Solo standalone film, as well as Episodes VIII & IX on the horizon, it appears there is no end in sight for future films.
Variety is reporting that Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke to investors at a Goldman Sachs conference today and discussed a number of things, including the future of the Star Wars saga. Reportedly, Iger said that he recently met with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and mapped out upcoming Star Wars films through 2021 and beyond. Iger also mentioned that they have found a writer for another upcoming standalone film, one which will most likely be released in 2020(the film we presume Josh Trank was previously hired to direct).
Iger then moved on to discuss Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which he stated he has seen a rough cut of. About the film he said:
“It’s really interesting in terms of ‘Star Wars’ storytelling. ‘Star Wars’ has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time… we love what we’ve seen.”
He also spoke about the expected earnings of the film, which he explains may not equal that of its predecessor, Star Wars: The Force Awakens:
“We never felt it would do the level that ‘Force Awakens’ did. [But based on trailers & posters] The level of interest [in ‘Rogue One’] is as high as it was for ‘Force Awakens.'”
Given that numerous accolades The Force Awakens earned during it's box office run, including becoming the highest grossing film domestically, it will be difficult for all future Star Wars films to match or surpass it. It's good to hear the powers that be at Disney have realistic expections for these films. It's also very exciting to know that plans are already underway for Star Wars films in the next decade. On the Star Wars Underworld Podcast we have speculated previously about how many films to expect in the future, and whether or not there will be breaks in the release schedule at some point. Personally, I'm thrilled that we have a new Star Wars film to look forward to every year for, well, seemingly forever. There's no such thing as too much Star Wars in my book!

Im not clear on something. To the best of my knowledge the Han movie is coming out may following episode 8. And that's the move into making 2 films a year. Is that still the case?

It would seem to me that a Star Wars film will always be in some level of production based on what they've told us they want to do with releases. Saga movie every other year with ancillary films released every year between Saga films. So you have:
Saga other Saga other Saga
and so on ad infinitum.

They would be dumb to deviate from releasing one each December.

This is what I heard almost. I heard Han is in May and 9 is that December not the following may. The move to two films a year.

I fully expect a move to 2 per year eventually. So that makes total sense. I have no idea, I just asked Google and that's what Google told me.

All the speculation now is what that last film is. Standalone or start of new trilogy?
I just can't see them leaving it more than perhaps two years before they kick off again or announce it as an ongoing series? That's the thinking out in podcast land too
