Also, we've been having this covers conversation for at least 8 years at this point. This is just pearl jam now. Unfortunately or fortunately.

The only cover I have a problem with is RITFW. Its terrible. Comfortably Numb was surreal in Telluride and Surrender should be a bar band cover song. Its one of the best bar band songs around and ed sounds great on it.

It doesnt detract from the show for ol' strat. What does detract from the show are songs that ive heard a million times and stuff off backspacer and lightning bolt.

The "covers that are barely covers" for me are: RITFW, Crazy Mary, Crown of Thorns, and Sonic Reducer. I Am A Patriot is juuuust on the outside looking in, but squeezed out because they just reworked it.

The Mirrorball songs are kind-of-but-not covers for me, eg. Act of Love and Throw Your Hatred Down.

I'd add those to my list, even though they're rarely played. Frequency isn't everything; Baba O'Riley has been played over 150 times, but it had been anthemic for decades before PJ got a hold of it. RITFW, on the other hand, had only been out for three years before they started covering it.

Fun fact: taking every show the band has ever played into consideration, covers have made up 8.5% of all the songs played. What's been played less?

Lightning Bolt - 2.1%
Backspacer - 2.8%
Riot Act - 4%
Avocado - 4.2%
Binaural - 4.5%
No Code - 6%

This is nuts, Strat.

I'd take the lousiest Pearl Jam song over virtually any cover they play.

I feel like if you're excited for Comfortably Numb but bored by Even Flow or Daughter, it's time to pack it in.

I dont fully mean it and i admit that having even flow played detracting from my experience is my own fault.

Baba, masters of war, surrender, crazy mary, patriot, etc..etc... does not.

It bothers me they dont play No Code - Riot Act on a regular basis like they do Ten and Vs. That is depressing.

and i dont think taking the 5 covers they play out of the setlist would mean they would play their better songs. They would just play more of Ten and Vs and maybe a couple more Vitalogy tracks.

Besides the covers, there are very few songs on that setlist that the band doesn't play regularly these days (Habit is one that stands out as rare now, and Tremor Christ, Dissident, and Glorified G a bit less so).

I see it as proof they can rely on their own material (along with a few really unique covers) to carry a "stadium" show - and this is when they had 7 fewer albums of original material to draw from. Hopefully Wrigley II mirrors Fenway II in featuring more of their own catalog.

A cover or two around closing time is cool, a lot of bands do it and it adds flavor to the set. It's just...it's Pearl Jam's music I have the connection with. I have a connection with the Who, with Neil Young, with Pink Floyd, etc., as well, but with this type of show, a degree of that connection is lost when the songs are filtered through another artist (it's not the same as when, say, Brad Mehldau covers Neil Young, and I hear the song in an entirely different way). I just prefer their songs. They have good songs!

Just watched a trailer on IMDB for Gleason - really made his presence at Wrigley that much more powerful to me, wish I had that background when he came out on stage. I knew who he was, had watched the interviews with the band from a year or two ago, but really didnt get the full levity of that situation. Good on PJ - regardless of whether they played too many covers, part of what makes this band great is their attachment and promotion of causes. Agree or not, at least they are trying to shine a light on things they feel should be illuminated. The marriage proposal was cheesy as hell, but we got there because Ed was touched by the story of a vet and his gf making an effort to get him to the show...reminded me of him signing the prosthetic limbs at ACL show.

OK - so wanted to post about watching the Gleason trailer...the other stuff just fell out - no real plan going in or organization. Sorry.

They played the Gleason trailer on the screens before the Fenway shows.
