Not to be a total Debbie Downer, but I think Penn and Teller summed up a great thing to note about conspiracy theories in general (they used the truthers as an example):
Quote:
Wasn't 9/11 enough of a conspiracy to make the theorists happy?
Religious fanatics, directed by God, conspired to use planes as suicide bombs. They conspired to destroy an American landmark, to kill thousands of people, and to crush the economy, liberty, and spirit of the greatest nation on earth. They did it on a low budget, with pure cunning and psychotic determination. Don't the conspiracy theorists realize that sometimes, something simple, and small, and crazy, and mean, can destroy something big and beautiful?

Something else that I want to add on as to how absurd things have gotten in this regard. Within hours after the Boston Marathon bombing, people were already jumping to conclusions as to how something greater was afoot. How can you be so certain of your hypothesis in such a short period of time?

It makes people's lives more interesting, for better or worse. Now, a moment something happens a blog/message board will find a conspiracy in anything.

Just read the one about David Stern and the Knicks for the first time. I love the internet.
I totally believe that one - the banging of the Knicks envelope on the side of the drum leaving it with a clearly visible bent corner while all of the others are tossed directly in, and the big exhale Stern does before picking the envelopes

The CIA has at least considered the use of false flag attacks in the past, but they are simple and easy to hide their involvement. Nothing as ridiculous as 9/11.
Though they did also plan to blow up nukes on the moon to scare the russians...

I don't tend to believe in conspiracy theories because they all tend to require more filling in the gaps than I am comfortable with - a leap of faith, much like religion - but I am open to hearing about them and generally believe that there is more going on than the media/government tells us.
