I've read interviews where he said he was never involved with any scenes where R2 had to move (I assume 'roll'), and that he didn't have a lot of scenes with the principal cast ("I barely met them"). But the dome movements and light flashes are not recognizably different for those rolly scenes...so did he do those when he was in the robot, but not otherwise? Or was there a remote controller offscreen?

I've never been clear what he actually did, other than prove that Anthony Daniels is a complete scrote.

He had his name on the scroll. Isn't that all that matters?

He did that little tip to one side then the other move when R2 would get excited or frustrated.
