Thanks. I tried. Even started up a Nels Cline station on Pandora.

Either he's just not resonating with me or I happened upon a handful of his most boring songs. I'm hardly hearing any guitar actually, sounds like mostly horns and wind instruments.

His solo stuff is one outlet. Here are others:

Spoiler: show
Go to 1:29

The solo starting at 2:49 is sublime:

Spoiler: show
From 2:30 onward is pretty fantastic:

There's a YT link in the first post of the thread if that helps.

Finally spinning Lovers this morning, I absolutely love it. Could very easily become my favorite Nels Cline album, but we'll see how the second half of the record turns out...

Some of the chord changes on this album are profoundly interesting. I find myself getting lost in the music, paying attention on a sub-conscious level, and then he'll introduce some chord, and the whole ensemble fills it out with horns, marimba, etc, and it just sounds so rich and complex that it just pulls me back into the music, forcing me to pay attention.

It's great. It reminds me of Bill Frisell's mellower stuff.

Definitely similar, but more, I don't know, "anchored" is the best word I can find. I'll listen to a Frisell album and enjoy it, but afterwards not have any clear recollection of what it was he was playing. The chord changes and sounds on this one seem a little more "sticky," in that I'll be able to remember certain parts after listening.

Yeah, I've loved this album and have had it repeating through a few work days lately.

Excellent indeed, and perfect for background or more involved listenning, depending on whatever I happen to be up to at the time.

The cover of SY's Snare, Girl is divine. It's like something out of Lawrence of Arabia.

Finished my first run-through. Sweet jesus, this is gorgeous stuff. I can say with confidence it's my favorite Nels record outside of his work with SY, Wilco, or Mike Watt. I'm gonna play it again right now.

Have you listened to History, Mystery?

I have not, actually. I've heard When You Wish Upon a Star, Guitar in the Space Age, Blues Dream, Big Sur, and then some of his shared work with Matt Chamberlain and Jon Brion. I think that's it.
