Man I love how this album opens with Life Wasted taking us out of the murkiness of the middle years...but listening back I do think this album has some production problems. a lot of these songs actually sound better to me on the phenomenal 2006 tour. still one of their best albums. Hope that tonight they play some (but not all please!!) of it
I think Life Wasted gets a bad rap (bad wrap? bad rep? I've never considered the spelling of that phrase before...) around here. It's a great classic rock riff that does indeed immediately shake the cobwebs off the beleaguered (and lovely) sounding Riot Act. In less than two seconds, you knew this was going to be a very different record. S/T is ultimately a mixed bag, and the production doesn't do it any favors, but I think Life Wasted in particular is a slam dunk.
it's so good. the kind of huge passionate song I was waiting for, with one my favorite mike solos

I really like this one..I adore this moment of the band...the mix and production is pretty horrible, and i guess thats why they ditch Adam Kasper..but i like the songwriting, and how aggressive and straightforward the music is...but what i like the most was watching the band going to snl again, to letterman, doing rolling stone, making a great tour, a video...they nailed all that.
Favorite ones: Life wasted, WWS, Comatose, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Big Wave, Army Reserve.

Hey guys, don't make fun of Stone's favorite riff!
Quote:
Gossard's all-time favorite riff of his, he says, is 2006's spastic rocker "Life Wasted." "That one just sticks out to me. But I like the way that riff has some weirdness to it, but also some AC/DC-ness to it. I just like that little bit of weirdness."

The riff itself is fairly simplistic, but the song taken in total takes some pretty unexpected turns, some of which are more successful than others, I think. It doesn't seem to follow a typical structure. It goes from a verse straight into a bizarre pre-chorus thing into a chorus, back to a pre-chorus, solo, verse, out of nowhere bridge, and out on a chorus.
