I've been to 20 shows...so from personal favorite to least (I've enjoyed every one of them):

1) MSG 5/21/10 - hands down best show I've seen from anyone.
2) Philly 10/31/09 - the lack of love for this show comes from people listening to the bootleg, but the atmosphere was just so fun.
3) MSG 7/8/03 - the energy at the encore of this show was something akin to reveling in the end of the world.
4) MSG 9/11/98
5) Mansfield 7/11/03
6) MSG 6/24/08
7) MSG 6/25/08
8) MSG 5/20/10
9) MSG 7/9/03
10) Brooklyn 10/19/13
11) Albany 5/12/06
12) Saratoga 8/27/00
13) Randall's Island 9/28/96 (first show)
14) Indianapolis 6/22/03
15) MSG 9/10/98
16) Lollapalooza 8/5/07
17) Albany 4/29/03
18) Jones Beach 8/24/00
19) Hartford 9/13/98
20) Hershey 7/12/03

They should really start avoiding Manchester. Night 1 in 2012 was the worst PJ show I've seen by some way (couldn't attend night 2). Granted it was the first night of the tour, but nothing seemed to click both with the band and the crowd. The setlist is fairly middle of the road and no crowd should be burdened with a full version "Why Can't I Touch It". 2009 wasn't up to much either.

You're spot on about Leeds. Absolutely staggering show.

I find this list funny because it doesn't take into consideration the quality of the band's performance at all, just how "hyped up" the shows were. Hershey was a short show at a shitty venue, but they played like motherfuckers. Just listen to the boot. One of the tightest from that tour. The Philly '09 shows, on the other hand, were all "party" atmosphere and no substance. They were the sloppiest, most under-rehearsed shows they ever played at that point. Horrible performances. And I didn't need to hear the boots to know that. I think the crowd was so fucking drunk and stoned, they didn't care. Saratoga 2000 was also a dull crowd at a non-descript venue, but it might be one of their greatest performances ever. Yet you rank several recent shows higher. I don't get it.

I don't know about you, but I go to shows to listen to the band perform, not to make sure I'm seen, get drunk and party like I'm at some kind of frat hazing, but that's just me.

I don't know, but it just seems like 90% of the crowd is just there to party anymore, like it's a Phish show or something. Nobody pays attention to the music. This is most obvious when they play a deep cut and most people ignore them/go to the bathroom/go to the lobby to see what the football score is.

I went to a Phish show a year ago and the crowd was the most annoying crowd I've ever experienced.

Also, at Charlotte 2013 PJ show RM user: cutuphalfdead spent most of the time checking the Red Sox World Series score. So yeah, I hear ya.

I listened to that show the other night, stellar. I don't know about nondescript venue though, it is one of the best amphitheaters in the US; sure it's NY and it's not the Garden but I'd take a gig there any day. I also tend to see MSG as almost a crutch now, let the venue hype the show and thus quite possibly the performance; the sound is fairly shitty and a poor show is a poor show even if it were in your living room.

The atmosphere where I was at was confused and at times funereal. But down on the floor everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves when they weren't checking the Phillies score.

Well, what if his list was based off of how much fun he had? There's a lot that goes into how much one enjoys the show that doesn't have anything to do with performance. I've heard a lot of people say that they didn't enjoy their shows in 2000 as much as some of the later shows, even though we all love the bootlegs. A lot of people loved the Philly shows even though you and I hated them.

I mean, Weezer was tight as hell the two times I saw them and those shows sucked. But other people I went with thought they were great. It's all subjective.

At Hershey the band seemed tired and uninterested. I would not say they were "tight" by any means. In my bottom 5.

Actually, it was based 100% on my enjoyment of the show itself. When I go to a rock concert, I don't carefully listen for every hit and missed note, and I've actually never been drunk or stoned at a single Pearl Jam concert. I am there to have a good time, and the biggest part of that is the band, the next biggest is me, the next the person I'm with, and finally the crowd as a whole. From my perspective, this was sort of a breakdown of what I had seen. The Philly shows were really a great time. That Hershey show, you could just tell the band was exhausted from playing so long the night before, Vedder's voice was completely shot, and it just felt by the numbers throughout, like they promised to come play so they were physically present. The Philly shows were sloppy, but it seemed to me everyone was having a great time, including me. Had nothing at all to do with hype.

EDIT: I'll just add that 2-9 were all very close for me in terms of quality. Just had such an incredible time at all those...and really every show I have been to for that matter. None of these were bad shows by any stretch...even a tired and exhausted Pearl Jam is more fun for me than most other shows.

EDIT 2: Some Saratoga points...amazing show, but it is as low as it is only due to the quality of the shows from my perspective above them. And SPAC is probably my favorite of the venues I have seen them at from a pure venue standpoint. Sound there is incredible, and the setting, in the woods, is phenomenal.

In Chud Nelson's defense it was the World fucking Series! If the Rangers were in the World Series I'd be nowhere near a concert. I see both sides though. I hate when people are acting like fools at shows. Which is a main reason I don't go to as many shows anymore. I also try not go to a show unless I REALLY know the band.

Ya know something, even though its fairly low in my list....I still loved Manchester I. I was so disappointed by the '09 show that I wasn't expecting big things, add to that it was the first night of the tour. But I had a blast, and from where I was the crowd was great. I know Ed made a joke the next night about the first night's crowd being "a bunch of bankers or something" but I though the second night's crowd was flatter, despite arguably having a better setlist. Night I kicked my ass though.
