The harder edge of mainstream rock music in the late 90s turned into this awful caricature of misogynistic, homophobic, bro culture. It really is no wonder there was a staggering amount of sexual assaults at Woodstock 99.

Some other rock radio #1's from that same year: Pincushion, ZZ Top Deuces are Wild, Aerosmith
Van Halen's Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do missed the list be mere weeks. Shucks.
Meanwhile, no list that involves the phrase 'dominating the airwaves' should ever include Liz Phair, Cracker, or the Meat Puppets.
The point is, you're right about the late 90's...it was pretty full of amelodic, gripless posteuring. But you put on your rose glasses for the era that you remember fondly, which was mostly decorated with unremarkable shit, legacy artists getting their last gaspy wheez around the chart circuit, and songs about being cumbersome to your girl.

yeah, late 90s radio was terrible. but it was cool in that it forced me to start to listen to classic rock stations more, and introduced me to all the 60s and 70s stuff i was only somewhat familiar with via my parents.

It sure did in minneapolis due to Mary Lucia rocking Zone 105 FM. The list I stated was absolute truth in my world and thats all that matters. The rest of the world was full of idiots.

All songs that I dearly loved at the time. Tremendously LOVED at the time. And three of those are still in fairly heavy rotation.
I still listen to System of a Down's first album from time to time.
SoaD had some many fucking outstanding songs. I'm not sure I have a favorite album of theirs but I have a dozen or so songs that I'll still listen to and rock the fuck out.

The first two records are fantastic. After that it's all downhill.
