I pulled an old Canon scanner out of the attic and I'd like to start using it again. However, I don't have the right driver or whatever to get it working with Windows 8.1

The Canon website only has driver for Vista, XP, and earlier, not Windows 8.1

Is there a workaround? Google has not been helpful.

Just get CamScanner Pro for Android and it'll make really nice PDFs just from taking a picture of a document.

Thank you for the input. Unfortunately, that option will not work for me. I want to be able to create images using a flatbed scanner.

Try using Google to search for the model number and the word 'Driver'. Be wary though, you'll find many virus loaded sites. Scan everything first.

This will be no help - he said in the original question that he can't scan
