I really don't think there's a massive dive in quality between Riot Act and this record, I think they're a pretty similar mix of a few great songs, a bunch of really good ones and a couple of duds.

It's just a shame this one sounds so terrible.
yup.
I actually think the high end of S/T is better than the high end of Riot Act, and far fewer duds.
But RA certainly beats the crap out of this in terms of the production.

Just like Riot Act, this one really grew on me as time passed. But 100% agreed that if this album was recorded differently (ie. better) it would be a completely different (ie. better) record

The first 4 tracks are all awesome. Then Marker is the first " should have been great" song of the record...Parachutes is great, Unemployable is great, Big Wave too...pretty much a great record for me.

Every spring I reach for this album. There's just something special about it that makes me keep coming back for more. First 8 songs are great, loses steam a little at Gone (great outro and all but the verses are just so... Blah), but closes nicely (even if Inside Job is one of the weakest closers in their catalogue.). My vote for most under-appreciated PJ song probably goes to Life Wasted.

This album is loaded to the brim with bland, uninspired riffs. The most interesting songs are Unemployable, Parachutes & Big Wave. Everything else is bottom of the barrel as far as Pearl Jam goes. Easily their worst album.

the first 3 songs on this album is my favorite 1-2-3 on any PJ record. WWS and Comatose are the two best punk sounding songs PJ has ever written (and I especially love the groove in WWS), and life wasted has a great riff that just hangs in the air, hovering over the rest of the song, and a fantastic solo by Mike.

whats weird is tracks 4 and 5 are probably the best on the record.
i love the music to comatose, its some of the best aggressive music the band has made. whats holding the song back is eddie vedder trying to sing like he used to be able to, but can't anymore. its a fun song to hear at a concert, but almost embarrassing to listen to on a bootleg.
WWS nailed exactly what eddie vedder had in mind. its catchy and has a kinda fun groove, and the chorus repeats "worldwide suicide".
i got super stoned and figured out a narrative to this album. i might get super stoned again later and post it.
