And Nothingman is just beautiful. I'll never understand how anyone could consider it the weak point on Vitalogy in the presence of the weird tracks plus Whipping, Satan's Bed, etc. But this is RM so that sounds about right.

That's right, you're the person who said Pearl Jam is the only band you'll spend money on.

That should probably be your signature. It'd provide a nice context for all of your posts.

Why spend money on music from other bands when you can get it for free on the internet? :)

I actually think that's a good signature. I'll get to it.

I dunno. Some people appreciate the time, effort, craft, energy, etc. that artists put into it, I guess.

Which makes it funny that the band you don't have a problem spending money on is one that at this point puts out records that are devoid of all of those things. Which I suppose isn't really funny, it just makes you a man of your principles in a weird sort of way.

I could get PJ music for free if I wanted. The reason I pay for it is because they're the only band I have an emotional attachment to. No other band is that important to me. I have all their albums, including the ones I don't really like too much.

I still kept buying their music when they were putting out records devoid of those things, even if I rarely listened to them. No Code, Binaural and Riot Act are in great condition. Yield is a bit worse off.

I still have a hard time remembering what was going on in and around Pj at the time. This record still seems wilfully obtuse in a lot of ways, mainly the 'arty' tracks. Still seems like a response to their popularity and a way to shave off a large portion of the fanbase/public glare.

But then a few of their best songs ever are sitting cheek by jowel with those tracks..

it's still in the top 3 best sounding Pj albums though. And the artwork is kick ass

Oh good. We haven't had a 'I don't like the album so they must not care' post in a while

Well, you sure can't argue that they put a lot of time into it. Which makes it hard to argue effort, really.

And there are implications to that, as well...such as, what craft exists on the record is more a matter of applied experience and time-supported muscle memory than of careful construction and dedicated effort.

But I guess there is still energy. I hear Ed runs on treadmills.

Yes, because amount of time spent recording always ='s quality. that's why Chinese Democracy was so good and the early beatles records are such shit

Very little of lightning bolt feels half finished or incomplete. The songs are fully fleshed out and generally, I think, quite strong. There are often choices made that end up not displaying the songs in their best light, but there is a clear logic behind why those choices were made. Lightning Bolt didn't need more time in the studio. It needed some different decisions to be made.

Early Beatles records were hurried, but had a monsoon of vitality and creative spark at their backs. Chinese Democracy worked really, really hard, and managed to be just a great comedy record.

So, yea, I suppose that when you've got a rush of ideas and excitement about your work, the raw revelation of that experience can lead to brilliance. Backspacer could even have had a little of that, with a different production style.

But maybe when you find yourself doing things like trying to make a record that is totally based on the summation of things you've already done, not having enough "I gotta get this on there" ideas after 3 years to prevent you from finding room for a previously released track, allowing your producer to have the premier guiding hand in how the project sounds and turns out, and subconsciously embracing your status as a purely nostalgic presence....well, maybe those things compact upon each other, and create a condition under which time, thought, and effort are required to get back to where you once belonged.

From all account sleeping by myself was put on because BoB really wanted it there, not because they needed it to fill run time. And the full band version is great. Between this and Betterman he is batting 1000 on these calls (I am assuming he is not responsible for including supersonic on backspacer).

The leaving BoB in charge point is certainly a fair critique
