16. Starla/(Beautiful) [Amherst, 1-28-1997]
Listening to this again I am once again astonished and blown away by this song, and this version of the song. Here's a song they performed only twice on the MCIS tour, likely because it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the material they were performing. Here they drop it in again, at the end of their first encore (instead of the usual Drown/Siva combo from this leg of the tour), and it elicits a fascinating response - there is a very small and very vocal minority who are very excited to hear it (none more so than the girl standing next to the taper), while the rest of the crowd is quiet. The song, stripped of the studio version's psychedelic lead, builds slowly - but when the whole band kicks in and starts to rock, Billy sings a verse of "Beautiful" over the third verse, and it fits in wonderfully.
When they reach the bridge, it's back to good old "Starla" - the listener can be excused for thinking Billy is going to kick into some serious guitar pyrotechnics (see the London 1994 version above, with the best guitar solo Billy Corgan will ever play) - but instead, when they kick into the outro, it's a slow burn that builds and builds and builds until Billy plays this restrained but unfathomably beautiful solo that just builds and builds until you wonder how he can possibly end it. And he does, and it's just PERFECT.
For all of the things that Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins have done and said that were just wrong, it's easy to forget just how incredible they were when they were on. This version of "Starla" is one of the finest examples of what an absolutely incredible band they could be.

This was really lovingly done, huh
Well, I started it in 2006, so...yeah. I'm just glad I finished it. Some of this stuff almost literally got me through a lot of crazy times in college and the period thereafter.

i'm starting to understand what you've been saying about the pumpkins being a bootleg-lover's dream. the enormity of studio stuff available, even without the reissues, is massive.

Well, yeah - there are FOUR different Mellon Collie demo tapes, plus a 3-month mix and a near final mix. There are two Adore demo tapes, several mix tapes Billy leaked out, as well as the holy grails - the Mashed Potatoes box set and the Quiet and Other Songs demo. There's also a ton of in-studio radio performances, tons of FM soundboards, and hundreds of high quality audience tapes.
And this is just the stuff that's circulating. Billy said there's something like 10,000 tapes in the band's archives, including multi-track soundboards of every show from 1995, a ton of pro-video footage and tapes of every studio session and virtually every rehearsal the band ever played.

I wish that this sort of stuff - this level of documentation of performance - was available for a couple of other bands I like.
HINT HINT SOUNDGARDEN AND QOTSA IF YOU'RE READING THIS
The self-absorption that is responsible for Billy's exhaustive documenting of his output is also the fundamental drive behind the Pumpkins' rise and fall. A guy like Homme is too smart, and more secure. He understands something about maintaining the mystery.

I've never felt any real urge to listen to live pumpkins, but I put that acoustic cherub rock on last night, and i'm definitely going to have to find time to listen to this thing in its entirety

Okay, the first track I've totally fallen in love with from this comp is Porcelina from 11-29-00. This is god-like stuff. The part from about 7:00-7:30 is giving me visions, totally sober.
These guys, when they were at their best, were the equal of anybody.
