I'm kind of amazed still at the reaction "In Utero" gets and continues to get.
I can't fathom that a collection of half-ass Bleach/Nevermind outtakes with a few slightly-uninspired "new" songs thrown in was the best Cobain could do. But I guess it was.
Yet people talk about it like it's a masterpiece.
Maybe I'm wrong, but man was it deflating hearing that album for the first time.
I remember thinking "this is it?" and that they wouldn't be lasting much longer.

Pitchfork of course has an overwrought and way overthought archival review of Incesticide on their site this morning.
I have always been a fan of this release because it’s really the moment where Nirvana sounds loose and really sounds like them to me. There’s no fuss on production values, or worries about song selection, or whether the album is DIY enough for everyone’s own version of street cred. It’s just a collection of leftovers that shine bright on this band at its easiest. Hell, Aneurysm is the closest they’d ever get to stretching out.

I remember grabbing Incesticide after not loving Nevermind, and immediately becoming a Nirvana fan. Was like “oh now I get it, they’re actually an awesome band.”

Oh yeah. I already had some of those songs on bootlegs so it was an awesome release at the time.
And it wasn't really that much like "Bleach" either.
Probably one of the best b-sides albums ever that shows a depth that people didn't know they had.

I certainly existed as a Smashing Pumpkins fans at least through Mellon Collie (I was done after that). But I would still take the worst Nirvana album over the best Smashing Pumpkins album with only a brief hesitation for Siamese Dream.

Agree.
