My highest rating is actually in bullet (1 or 2 mins to move, total). Chess gets scarier the slower you get!

MD, if you've never played with a clock, you really ought to. It adds another dimension. There are apps that will do this for you.

I never learned chess...

me either...i feel like i'd be terrible at it though

would you recommend it to Knee Tunes?

I actually have watched three episodes and am thus far enthralled.

Loved that movie.
This show, though, is being massively overhyped. Every aspect of the storytelling was cliche or convenient. The first episode was fantastic. The second was pretty good. Then it very quickly devolved into every episode of Behind the Music.

Just finished Queen's Gambit. I was pretty into it for the first few episodes, but by the end it felt unfocused and kind of half-assed. I got the impression they didn’t know what exactly they were trying to do and kinda awkwardly tried to do a bunch of different things. I was cringing in the end. It's the kind of story that would have made better twists and turns, or lack thereof, if it were based on a real life character, as it very much feels like a paint-by-numbers, feel good, made for TV (Netflix...) series. It's not many rungs higher in quality than a Hallmark movie. I'm very disappointed that this is supposedly the cream of the crop of streaming right now.

There are some shows my wife likes, apparently. Otherwise I would have cancelled a while ago.

I think Hulu, HBO, and D+ are a winning combo.

That eighth episode of season one of Ozark was so bad. What a mess.

So was the show originally going to intercut flashbacks throughout the whole season? This episode made it seem like that was the plan, but then they scrapped that idea in the final hour, but had all these flashback scenes they didn't know what to do with so they put them in one episode in random order.

I heard her interview on Fresh Air yesterday and was captivated. I'm bored to tears watching this. (Although, it is reinforcing my dream of ever moving there.)

Cancelled our sub for now. Too much stuff on Amazon, Hulu, and HBO Max to catch up on.

Count me fully in on Queen's Gambit.

Three episodes in, and so far my biggest takeaway is how authority figures have let her down in almost every way. Over and over again. That monologue about how she understands chess in terms of the board rather than the pieces feels like such a reaction to this specific truth in her life. Such good storytelling.

Queen's Gambit was solid. I seem to like it less than others but only in the sense that it left a lot on the table. I don't think it's a masterpiece. B+

Highly enjoyable with great performances. Beautiful shot. A lot to dissect.

I also was captivated at first. It ultimately deteriorated into being a very generic, boring series.

Started Night Stalker series. On the fourth episode. Pretty crazy how Ramirez was brought down.
