Anybody want to do that draft thing I mentioned awhile back? We draft a team and have some set timeline (3 years?) and have some metric that we use to quantify the best team. I don't have the details worked out at all, so ideas are welcome from anybody who wants to do it.
We could use advanced stats like PER or win shares and just add them up. We could offer bonus points for accomplishments (awards, championships) or not since awards are subjective and championships are a team accomplishment. Along those same lines playoff accomplishments (game/series wins, game winning shots, highest PER of the playoffs, etc.) could matter or not. We could just go straight fantasy points scoring and add them up each year. (That idea appeals to me the least.)
As long as we make the decisions before the draft we can do it however we want. Obviously depending on how we choose to handle some of those issues bulk scorers on bad teams might end up being more or less value just like guys on teams competing for rings and having deep playoff runs could end up more or less valuable.

I'm in if we can just pick our squad and then decipher the winner three years from now. I don't want to have to manage my team, trades, sign free agents, etc.
We each pick like 10 players and see where we land when it's over. If your squad is down to 7 active players by that time, so be it.

Yeah I don't envision this a fantasy type of set up. We'll draft a team and revisit it probably once at the end of each season to update the scores but once you've drafted that's it.

Wait when is the draft? I thought they were waiting until 2021?
What’s it going to take to get Bradley Beal?
The NBA draft is November 18. Our draft we want you for is undetermined lol.

Okay I'm at home enjoying a tropical storm day in November so I'm going to work on this today.

I think win shares is the way to go. I'm good including playoff win shares as well. I'll make some posts showing numbers from the last two seasons, but including the playoffs will provide the biggest boost to the best player(s) on teams reaching the Finals (about 3 to 5 WS) and a small boost (1 to 3 WS) for other stars in the playoffs. That seems fair to me.
For example in 2020 AD, LeBron, and Butler would have each gotten a boost of 3.5 to 4.5 WS for their playoff success while Giannis would have only picked up 1.4 WS for his playoffs. So it's enough to matter and to make us prioritize guys who can actually win over guys filling the stat sheet on losing teams. But also not so much that it skews things towards drafting clearly inferior players who happen to be on competitive teams.

Here is 2019-2020 sorted by top 12 regular season. Bigger boosts for longer playoff runs. This also is missing a guy like Jamal Murray who had a decent regular season (4.3 WS) but the 4th most playoff WS (2.7), so he would have gotten a nice big boost by including playoffs.
Player Regular Season WS Playoff WS Total WS James Harden 13.1 2.4 15.5 Damien Lillard 11.6 0.3 11.9 Giannis Antetokounmpo 11.1 1.4 12.5 Anthony Davis 11.1 4.5 15.6 Rudy Gobert 10.7 0.9 11.6 LeBron James 9.8 4.3 14.1 Nikola Jokic 9.8 2.5 12.3 Jimmy Butler 9.0 3.5 12.5 Chris Paul 8.9 0.8 9.7 Luka Doncic 8.8 0.5 9.3 Kawhi Leonard 8.7 2.4 11.1 Bam Adebayo 8.5 2.6 11.1
I think we should include playoff WS, seems like a better reflection of the season that way. If that's okay with you guys, we can decide whether we want to have any bonus categories that could offer +1 (or even +0.5) for certain accomplishments: MVP, FMVP, all-pro, all-defense teams, championship, conference championships, etc.

With the first overall pick, 4/5 selects Rasheed Wallace.

I wonder how cheap it will be for some team to move up to grab a top draft pick. Seems like there's a lot more sellers than buyers this year.
