Omg Flavdav hi man, how've you been?
How do you feel about the 2004 Brian Wilson version of Smile, in contrast to Smiley Smile and other stuff from those sessions that's made its way to the public ?

Doing well all things considered. How about you?
I appreciate the 2004 Brian Wilson release for what it is - a reimagining of those original sessions (and maybe closure for BW?) but since it was all newly recorded, it didn't have the same feeling to me.
Smiley Smile was my first exposure to any SMiLE material way back when. I view Smiley Smile as a tight little album from that era that has more hits than misses. The versions of Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations, and Vegetables are excellent, but some songs, Wonderful especially, are inferior compared to the SMiLE versions. I don't miss the exclusion of Surf's Up in this set because I think it fits more on the 1971 Surf's Up.
Because the tracking of The Smile Sessions (2011) was based on Brian Wilson's 2004 record, it feels like "album" portion is not entirely faithful to the vinyl LP era with its three "movements." I recently came across a fan made version that reconstructs SMiLE as a two-side LP with the two singles leading off each side (Our Prayer/Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations) while having Cabin Essence close the first side and Surf's Up close the second. To me, that's the definitive version I listen to most, even though Wilson says he prefers his 2004 re-construction. I'd love to have that on vinyl.

I could have written that exact same post Word for Word, because it’s all true for me. I’ll add that I saw at Wilson on the smile tour, and that helped me appreciate his re-recorded version a bit more

I would've loved to have seen that tour. I caught a Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary show a few years ago. Great show. Sail On Sailor with Blondie Chaplin was a highlight.
