Hi Rager. What are your reference points for "good Pearl Jam"?
Everything through the self-titled Pearl Jam album works for me, with Vs to Binaural a cut above the others and No Code as the peak. Heck, even Backspacer is OK. The last two didn't do much for me.
Lightning Bolt and Gigaton sound very, very different to me, but of course your experience is different than mine. I agree that No Code is phenomenal, even though it has a couple of my least favorite PJ tracks on it (Lukin, don't hate me everyone, and Mankind).

other than seeing them in person, i haven't listened to pearl jam live in probably 15 years.
I haven’t seen them live in 17 years, and never really cared for listening to live stuff at home, but I did just recently sit in a vr theater with my brother and watch a well-shot St Paul show from 2014 and was really surprised by how good it sounded.
THeyre aged but they sound good.
The band really still plays their assess off. Its ed that can really throw a bootleg listening experience out the window with his ranting and getting drunk.
But, overall, Pj still has it.
I don’t know if that particular show (10/19/2014, better than nothing videos on YouTube) is abnormally good or is just totally average. I’m not kidding when I say it’s been 17 years for me. But it hit me, my brother, and later my son and wife pretty hard. And I’m the only person in that group that’s ever spent money on a Pearl Jam record.
Let me take you to a show, McP
For whats its worth, my friend who was once obsessed with pearl jam but has since moved on (would fit right in on RM), thought that ST. Paul show was awful.
After test driving 6 other post-2010 shows and not being able to finish a single one, I dunno. This one show really hits me. I’d be thrilled to have it demonstrated to me that it’s not above average, because it sure compares well to the other ones I tried.

They had awful seats and they hate lightning bolt and all the stories and guest ed brought out.

Yup. Wasn’t even there and that show is one of the better shows I have listened to.
I ended up buying this, and my reaction was:
1. It sounds better than any of the 2013 stuff I tried, which mostly sucked. 2. It’s got a much better set of songs than the concert in the video I posted, and it was probably a better concert to be at. 3. I think the band plays better in the video’d St Paul show. There are fewer noticeable mistakes, and Ed in particular seems fired up and not having to strain. I enjoy it quite a bit more as a document. It should be a goddamn dvd.
“If we ever happen to meet somewhere,” Ed says at the end of the night, “Mexico, South America, Texas, Seattle, Chicago....if there’s a way to show me you were here. Hey. Just tell me you were here. Drinks are on me.”
And maybe that’s one of his bs audience connection lines now (how would I know), but man...after this show, I believe him.
Listened to the Vault show from the Vic Theatre for the first time. After a rough All or None, Ed sounds fantastic on this. Might be the best version of Sad I've ever heard.
