I like this album better than any dead studio album

What is Garcia's first solo album asks the lazy.

Gomorrah?

I forget the feeling of a song filling all corners of the room, all walls, ceiling to floor,

and the Dead just touching some bits of air here and there, every now and again

Ace is cool cause its pretty much a GD album, but yeah Garcia's you can recommend to anyone, even someone who hates the Dead and they'd be like, ah ok, this is good.

Download Series Vol. 3 - Live at the Palestra, Rochester, NY 10/26/71

So the goal in hitting up this show was to sort of experience a Dead show that I did not see as some sort of essential epic listen. Why? Because I was curious to know them when maybe it wasn’t the most epic night.

This set is a fascinating listen because of the stark difference between the two sets. Set 1 is marred with sound and crowd issues and you can feel the band’s agitation. The songs are shorter and while they are mostly all really good performances, this would not be a tombstone performance. However, the show really takes off in the second set, which is amazing from the get go. Of note is Phil Lesh’s bass jam on Truckin’ which just adds such a neat element to the song that I would never have thought of listening through the studio version.

Set 1: Bertha, Playing in the Band, Sugaree, Me & My Uncle, Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Big Railroad Blues, Me & Bobby McGee, Cumberland Blues, Cold Rain and Snow, Mexicali Blues, Loser, El Paso, Comes a Time, One More Saturday Night

Set 2: Ramble on Rose, Sugar Magnolia, Truckin’, Drums, The Other One, Johnnie B. Goode

Wow, very cool, early Ramble on Rose here. Never heard this show before, thanks! Keith joined in a week before, but he's pretty low in the mix.

I always liked DP 2 which was a few nights after this too.

Also fitting that I am in the midst of this journey (aka Summer of Jerry) coinciding with the 25th anniversary today of their last show.

Jerry Garcia - Jerry

Thanks to everyone who insisted I jump into this. This is a really great album full of unexpected turns and some great songs. The opening four songs, Deal, Bird Song, Sugaree, and Loser really play like the heart of the album and are all exceptional tracks. To Lay Me Down was also quite solid. The winner for me here however was The Wheel, which is such an epic closer with great sonic textures that just seem to hook you in.

The experimental instrumental tracks were quite something - makes Pink Floyd sound like The Beach Boys in comparison.

Up Next: two mega Dead shows...the first from that Europe run - Europe ‘72 Vol. 22 - London, England 5/26/72. Might take a few days because tomorrow I will certainly focus on the new MMJ album and it’s a pretty long show.

The "Dark Star" from DP2 is one of my all-time favorites.

Now there’s a rabbit hole I am falling in. I am queued up for that next show, but then realized after that I can legitimately choose between three other shows - now two I am definitely hitting up. So make it three or four shows from ‘72.

Sunshine Daydream should definitely be on your 72 list.

On a side note, I am throwing on repeat listens on Garcia before moving on.

Besides various European shows, I found these 5 titles to be more or less essential...

3/26/72 Dave's Picks 14
8/27/72 Sunshine Daydream
9/21/72 Dick's Picks 36
9/27/72 Dick's Picks 11
11/17/72 Dave's Picks 11

Yeah, the list keeps growing. At this point, I am likely going with London 5/26/72, Seattle 7/21/72, Veneta 8/27/72, Philly 9/21/72, NJ 9/27/72.

You should swap Seattle for 3/26 and/or 11/17, which might be my favorite dead shows in general.

The main issue I am having with that is Spotify does not currently have Dave’s Picks uploaded.

i've always kinda preferred gd studio vs. live. having said that, i have all the early stuff through american beauty and some 70's albums. i don't have much live, but i also don't feel like taking a deep dive in it like i did with pj (1998 - 2003 particularly). i have live in europe '72 which is really good, and a few of the dick's picks. i'm pretty content with that.
