I did the Danny Brown record last night. It was fine but didn't blow me away. I'll try the other one this weekend.
In other news, Jay Electronica claims his album will be out in 40 days.
So this is out and available on streaming platforms. Mixed feelings...
It's very much the Jay Electronica album fans have been waiting for: Old-school behind-the-beat flow, raps about spirituality, vintage pop culture references, etc. The beats sound exactly like his old stuff too: cinematic instrumentation, super colorful sounds, almost entirely sample-based...
It misses the mark a bit in that Jay is hardly even on the thing! I honestly think Jay Z has as many verses as Jay Elec. When Elec gets on the mic, it's still thrilling. But it's almost comical how little he's on this record.

Yeah I’ve listened twice and I love it. But it should be billed as a Jay/Jay record, because I think Jay Z really is featured the same, if not more, than Jay Elec.

Yup.
I’ve only got Best Of So Far.
Love whatever that is.
That's my go-to, but it's overly long, and there are a handful of things that have been released since. Was thinking I'd do something like half as long as Best Of So Far, plus with a few of those other tracks that haven't been included. I'll try to pull it together tomorrow.

Fuuuuck this album might be perfect.
“I got numbers in my phone / That’ll never ring again / Coz the lord done called them home / so we’ll never sing again / I got texts in my phone / That’ll never ping again / I screenshot em so I got em / I don’t want this thing to end”

Four spins and I'm gonna give this thing five stars. Maybe Gigaton will top it as my favorite album of the year? But I'd be pretty surprised if anything else did.
I've been waiting for this album since 2011. The tossed-off nature of it, the fact that it came with no prior warning, and that Jay Elec was able to completely maintain the vibe of his indie stuff, without getting sucked into trends or stupid guest verses from the flavor of the week... He somehow delivered on everything I'd hoped it would be by doing exactly what he was doing ten years ago: Brutally sad and/or inspiring rhymes, evocative production, and somehow getting Jay Z to show up and rap like he gave a fuck. Outstanding album.
Someday, in a not-too-distant dystopian future, America will simply be remembered as the land where artists of disparate origin came together to create records named Lulu.
