this album is...kind of bland. I don't know about this one, team. I really like Xian Man and Shadowbanned. The whole thing sounds like a bunch of hippies working an acoustic jam session circa 1968.

I had breakfast with my brother this morning and took my baby boy with me. He was fussy at breakfast so we drove around neighborhoods for a while to get him to sleep.
I put this album on for a first listen and it was perfect. I was in the perfect head space to enjoy it. You're right, trag. This is super different for Malkmus. The closest thing I would compare it to would be We Dance off of Wowee Zowee, or maybe Solid Silk? Definitely the first Malkmus project I've listened to where the mood and instrumentation takes hold before his lyrics do.
Lots of quiet, pretty moments woven through the words here. My only criticism so far would be that it definitely sounds pretty homogeneous. But then again, so did the recent Wilco at first listen, and that one has become an instant classic for me.
I look forward to spending more time with this album.

One of these days I am going to make Jorge (and the board) an introductory Malkmus & Jick mix.
That day is not today, but today is the day that I revisited Real Emotional Trash and found it better than I remember. Not that I ever considered it a "bad" album, but I used to consider it more of a vehicle for replicating a live & jammy experience while not really being a collection of bonafide "great" songs.
Cold Son, Out of Reaches, Gardenia, Wicked Wanda....
More of my favorite Malkmus songs on here than I remember.
