So I toyed with the idea of making an "Election 2024" thread, but was sure ruddo would ban me. So here's my thought in this thread:
Whether Trump wins or loses in 2020, is Romney already in the planning stages for the GOP 2024 primary? He's more or less protected when it comes to re-election in the Senate, and with his vote to convict Trump, his campaign ads write themselves: "We used to be the party of common sense, of right and wrong, of law and order...and we can be again."
What do you think?

Guys, I am not a moderator! I swear to God! Why does everyone think I'm a moderator?

Good call, I would have banned you but let the thread stay, so you could lurk and watch it prosper without you.
But yes, I think Romney is setting himself up for that.

Also I think there's a fair chance that Romney could angle for Senate Majority Leader instead. For him to break rank here, he must have a real sense of the degree to which more moderate conservatives are hanging on by a thread. Let's not forget that there's a huge divide, if largely privately, between the conventional Republicans and the Freedom Caucus types. McConnell's term is up in 2021, so Romney could begin jockeying for that now while the Presidential election plays out.

No chance. One of Trump's lackeys will get the job.

Again, highly dependent on the outcome of 2020. And that includes both the POTUS and Senate results.

Yes. I think he actually was hoping to be the 2020 candidate. Mitt's best chance isn't through the primaries, it's as a compromise convention candidate. I think his path was a real Senate trial with witnesses and testimony, public opinion turning strongly against Trump, increased pressure for removal, followed by a handful of electorally vulnerable and moderate Republicans voting to convict and basically the whole Trump thing feeling like it was crumbling and then the GOP deciding it could not win with Trump in 2020 and needing somebody to put on the ticket...perfect role for Mitt. But Moscow Mitch saved Trump's presidency, so that's out.
