just trying to think through the end game of such a play...Would the goal be to put Ukraine into a position where they need military aid? Thereby forcing a showdown between US and Russia on that front?

This seems probable. Heightened security panic following the attack, retaliation efforts underway and a lot of confusion at all levels. It’s the kind of civilian exposure you try to mitigate with careful planning.

I mean the alternative to “human error enabled by shoddy planning” is “Iran carefully avoided US service casualties, but then decided to really strike hard by killing 82 of its own people.”
