I've always wanted to get into The Tragically Hip. I really like the 2 or 3 songs I know of theirs, especially "Escape is at Hand for the Travlin' Man". Is that album (Phantom Power) a good place to start?

I feel like I'd probably fall hard for Primal Scream. I enjoyed Screamadelica a few times, but not enough to even remember the songs.

Phantom Power was their last really solid album, though they were losing a lot of the rock sound I fell in love with. I think with Phantom Power they were reckoning that they weren't going to make it in the US (or elsewhere) like they had hoped. The songs are a little smaller, with lots of very Canadian nods.

From Phantom Power my faves are;
Poets - Far from my fave on the album but this is them still trying to rock.
Bobcaygeon - This song always takes me away to a nice place.
Fireworks - I love the opening riff to death. The lyrics are quintessentially Canadian in such a quaint way.

But if Escape is your thing I can suggest the following, all post Phantom Power;

Music@Work (album);
Lake Fever,
The Bear

In Violet Light (album);
The Darkest One,
It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken - Just superb
Silver Jet,
The Dark Canuck

In Between Evolution (album) - this album is pretty solid.
Heaven Is a Better Place Today,
Gus: The Polar Bear From Central Park - Groove for days.
If New Orleans is Beat,
Are We Family,
Goodnight Josephine

World Container (album);
The Drop Off,
World Container

End of the day, The Hip were a live band. On their good nights, I would be transported from the first note. If it's available, check out Live From The Vault - Volume 1). Recorded on the Day For Night tour. Artistically, I think that album was their peak and this is a good representation of them in their golden hour.

My early faves, and it could really be the five album run of Up To Here through Trouble at the Henhouse;

The Tragically Hip (album);
Highway Girl

Up To Here (album) - beautiful thick guitars galore;
Blow at High Dough,
New Orleans Is Sinking,
38 Years Old,
Boots or Hearts

Road Apples (album);
Little Bones - The opening riff, so full of explosive potential set in a loose groove. I've seen this live where it felt like the universe exploding.
Cordelia,
Long Time Running - a slow smoker,
Three Pistols - Again, the opening riff into a loose groove. Lyrics couldn't get more Canadian.
Fiddler's Green - Poignancy at its best. When my kid was just a baby and he was going in for neurosurgery, well the future was very uncertain. I listened to this song, balled my eyes out and then went back into the hospital a little stronger and ready to face that future, knowing it would not be as dark as this song.

Fully Completely (album);
Just play the whole thing. It's a rock album through and through, and in the best sense of the word.
Wheat Kings - If you listen to one song off this album, make it this one.

Day For Night (album) - Their artistic best. They've really pulled back and have learned power in using space where they relied on a loose groove in the past. Just play the whole thing again.
Grace, Too
Greasy Jungle
So Hard Done By
Nautical Disaster
Scared - If you listen to one song off this album, make it this one.

Trouble at The Henhouse (album);
Gift Shop - Lyrically, the band facing up to the fact that for some unknown reason they aren't breaking big outside of Canada and learning to embrace.
Springtime In Vienna
Ahead By a Century
700 Foot Ceiling
Butts Wigglin
Coconut Cream

A long post but being Canadian, liking rock music and being in my 20's for their heyday, The Hip is in my musical DNA.

Seriously twisted stuff. I miss the days of his mid song stories.

And an early show, 1990. It starts slow but oh how it builds.

Pink Floyd is one for me. I feel like I know the hits, but not really much else. Never got into them like I did other bands of the time
