Tampa locking up Point for three years at 6.75 really hammers home just how fucking bad the Mitch Marner contract is.

Actually was just here to talk shit but then I looked up the specifics of the Toronto cap situation and I'm blown away all over again--currently 13 million over, with 30 million tied up in Tavares/Marner/Matthews and one defenseman signed for next season. Good luck.

Thanks!
The Marner contract is a clear overpayment, but let's talk about this again in a few years when Point signs a long-term deal for $12 million/year and Marner still has three years left on his current contract.
Being $13 million over means absolutely nothing at all. They'll be cap compliant when the season starts without losing anyone from their roster. They may have to have fewer players in the press box each game. Meh.
As for the defense, they have more than $12 million in expiring contracts on the blueline next year. That pays for one of Muzzin or Barrie, covers a small raise for Dermott as an RFA, and leaves a few million to make a small move or two. Add in a couple of the top defensive prospects in the league (Sandin and Liljegren) to provide a couple cheap, high-ceiling options on the back-end, and things will probably be just fine.
Also, the Lightning have $6.9 million in cap space for next year. They have 14 players under contract. This "paying your stars and rounding out the roster with league-minimum players" thing isn't exclusive to the Leafs.

Point's next contract will still be RFA, which is a pretty significant difference. Anyway good luck with those two rookie defensemen, a position everyone knows is easy to pick up.

One RFA year in which he'll get at least $9 million. Followed by a bunch of expensive UFA years.
And the beauty of the defense right now is that they can ease a rookie into the lineup this year - third pairing role, sheltered usage - and all of a sudden you aren't plugging a rookie in next year.

It's okay man you can just say it's a bad contract.
