I need to start a thread so we can collect all the ridiculous cases of people trying to stop much needed development.

I'm fine with either I think.

It is, and it's the good thing that's countering NIMBYism.

Meanwhile, in Lexington this thing is allegedly "historic".

Around here, there's a development that cut into the park, and everyone fought against it. They finished that development about a year ago.

Now the people that live there are pissed about a new development next to them that is going to cut into the park.

Returning home to small town Mississippi I was expecting to see a town slowly rotting, but I'm surprised to see it booming. New shops everywhere, and not just chain stores, but unique shops and restaurants. A lot of old buildings torn down, but I don't think anyone misses them. Traffic is terrible though. The sprawl is becoming unbearable.

Hard Time. He was surrounded by four walls that weren’t so pretty.

Oh the other other university.

I thought it was the other, other school. Are we not counting MSU anymore?

That is what I'm saying. Oxford > Starkville > Hattiesburg

Though actually I think I'd way rather live in Hattiesburg than Starkville

Oh I only saw one other. USM can't be considered a real school when it's football team isn't even in the SEC.

UM doesn't even truly belong to the SEC though.

I see two types of Nimbyism. There's "ew, poor people. Get them away." Then there's the type where people are worried about their property values. The latter is a solid argument.

I listened to a good podcast with Matt Yglesias and a woman from the Brookings Institute about housing. The woman (I think her name was Jen Schuetz or something) said that one of the problems is that so many people have the majority of their wealth tied up in their homes. So there's this fragility to any policy that would harm people's nest egg. And I don't know that there's an easy solution.

This problem infects the West a lot.

A building isn't a "landmark" just because your dumb ass remembers it from your childhood.

It's just a shitty stucco building that wasn't built to last.
