Ehh....I'm slowly backing away from this record. More power to you if you're excited for this evolution of theirs, I hope you enjoy. From what I've seen and heard, they're downplaying all the parts of S-K that I've loved, and sort of fumbling at the art-rock stuff that Annie excels at with varied results.
This particular performance feels like a reach for something different without really hitting their mark. The drums sound terrific, though.

Got tickets for DC in October and Houston in November. They both happen to work out that I'll be working in those cities at the time
One thing that is really not sitting well with me is how static they look on the stage. They used to be one of the most energetic live acts I'd seen, all sorts of movement and interplay. This stoic, detached thing doesn't work nearly as well for them. I wonder if they'll still cut loose on the older numbers?

Shit, I completely missed the on-sale date for tickets.
And while I'm not really on board with the stagecraft as of yet, I really doubt that's going to be stuck to all that much. I mean, if they're trying to do this static thing they couldn't hold it together for one full song on a late night broadcast. I'd agree that I don't want them to sacrifice volatility, but if the songs are good I'm not sure how much it matters. Both of these songs had the same trajectory for me; I didn't like them at first, and was worried they sounded like St. Vincent knockoffs than S-K experimenting with that kind of sound, and within a few listens that feeling was completely gone.

Wow. I love the song, but yeesh, this performance is completely inert.

I don't dislike either of these, but the impression I keep coming away with is that the whole just isn't more than the sum of the parts. I can easily imagine either of these songs with traditional S-K instrumentation, and I can easily imagine either of these arrangements with a completely different St. Vincent song playing over the top; they don't complement each other in a way that makes the overall package into something that is singularly special. I suppose I kind of hear it as the musical equivalent of painting your brown house blue after 20 years because you're bored of looking at brown -- something that's perfectly reasonable to do, the same colors do get boring after a while, but it makes the house look like it's changed way more than it really has. Once you get used to the blue, it's back to being the same old house.
This feels like the same old S-K to me. The new coat of paint is fine, but I also thought some of the chipped wood and peeling paint gave the old place some character.

Janet seemed so incredibly board for most of that song... LET HER LOOSE!!! Let Sam produce the next SK album

in all honesty, my distaste for that song is mostly wrapped around Carrie's vocals. they make me cringe. give or take the production of the song, it's st. vincent so it makes sense. not my thing, but expected.
