I agree at least. I would even go so far on a limb to say that for at least half of No Code, half of Vitalogy, all of Merkinball, and various selected moments throughout Pearl Jam’s catalogue. Nirvana was a great garage band that meant a lot to a lot of people, including me, during that short time span, but as years go by, for me, a comparison is not remotely close while it is apples and oranges to some extent (Nirvana’s catalogue should be compared with punk/garage while Pearl Jam leans more classic rock).

For preferences sake though, I would take Nirvana’s three albums over Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. But I would even have a hard time choosing between Nirvana’s best and the avocado album. Then again, I am a really big fan of that Pearl Jam band so it’s colored a bit by my own lenses.

To be fair though, most bands haven't.

I like Pearl Jam a lot but I probably enjoy Nirvana’s most obscure b-sides more than most Pearl Jam songs. That’s not a knock on Pearl Jam, I just think Nirvana were an incredible band and Kurt a uniquely gifted songwriter and musician.

I’m more intrigued by Kurt’s sketches and journals than his music

"Weird Question" is good but I've always been partial to "Toe Flange" from the In Utero sessions

I agree with the last part of this.

Still, it's no secret how much I love In My Tree. It is one of my all time favorite songs by any band.

A random BuzzFeed reporter on Veep was wearing a Mother Love Bone t-shirt on Veep last night.

Since we’re on the discussion, a little pontification on my relationship to Pearl Jam and Nirvana’s music. Back in 1993 or so, a teenager waiting for something, I discovered both of their music almost simultaneously. In the first couple of year, I was much more drawn to Nirvana. The feedback and raw power they had combined with Kurt Cobain’s voice was just a stunning combo I could not stop listening to.

However, starting on April 3, 1994, when I stayed up and painstakingly recorded every song that night that played on the radio, I started a similar obsession with Pearl Jam (I was already a fan but this is precisely when it started to get out of control). I was intensely focused on both bands, though within days we learned only one of them would continue to make music after that tragic suicide. The focus on both bands, typically Nirvana as #1 in my eyes and Pearl Jam a close #2 persisted until September 28, 1996, aka the first of many times I would see Pearl Jam live. I was blown away in ways those live recordings would never capture, and became at that moment a lifelong fan, not just of Pearl Jam but of live music.

In the years and shows that followed, the intensity by which I enjoyed Pearl Jam only increased while Nirvana became like a fond memory. The albums, the Unplugged show, and the bootlegs I collected still live on and get an occasional spin from time to time, but the live force that was and is Pearl Jam still powers the engine that reminds why I loved this stuff so much as a teenager while continuing to provide new and fresh perspectives on their now expanded catalogue. Long live Pearl Jam.

A dude shopping at one of the stores I hit up in Greenpoint the day after RSD was wearing a Temple of the Dog tour shirt. He didn't buy anything. I didn't talk to him, but I'm pretty sure he was after the Pearl Jam Easy Street record. Which the store did not have.

I have spoken to people at concerts I do not know for the simple reason that they were wearing a Pearl Jam shirt. He was lucky because I would have stopped him and demanded a conversation about the show and then to lament that we’ll never get another chance to see that again.
