2003 Tour of Japan
compilation & artwork by ridleybradout
August 2013
The 2003 tour of Japan was a unique one for Pearl Jam. After concluding an arena tour of Australia, the band found themselves playing to subdued audiences in smaller venues filled with Japanese businessmen in suits and ties. This atmosphere encouraged the band to take a different approach – playing unusual and varied setlists that were at times made up as they went. The rehearsal-like vibe was highly conducive to the band's quieter and more intricate tracks, leading to some special performances that showcased nuances often lost in more traditional concert environments. Having said that, when they decided to rock they did so HARD, with deliciously satisfying guitar-tones and some of Ed's most aggressive vocal performances of the decade. This compilation presents some of the best moments from that tour, the first disc focusing on the more chilled-out performances and the second on the rock. The icing on the cake is that the Japan bootlegs are sound-wise among the best Pearl Jam has ever recorded.
Special thanks to E.H. Ruddock, Lowlight79, Kevin Davis and everyone else who contributed to the discussion of tracks to be considered for this compilation. I had to make some tough (and possibly controversial!) calls in culling this down, as the tour was so good it could easily have run to 3 or 4 discs. Wendy Carlos's Twin is currently putting together his own take on the Japan tour, so his compilation should hopefully complement this one and fill in some gaps.
Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed making it

The full version of the track is also included for those who are digital-only these days and unconstrained by disc duration

I listened to disc 1 today. I really liked it, except for one thing. And I say this with all the gratitude in the world for the hard work that went into this, but I don't like You Are's placement. It didn't seem to flow right.

You're literally the worst internet fake anything of all time and beyond the fact you're being annoying, this still isn't about you. Go and seek attention elsewhere.

Oh, the forces at play behind this gem of a line! It all seems so clear to me now.
Thanks for the feedback anyhoo - You Are is always a difficult track to sequence in a live set. I took my cue from the actual Nagoya show that placed it as a come-down after the epic Improv>Immortality. I like You Are a as less-raucous set closer option, so it seemed the logical choice before the solo encore tracks. To each their own I guess.

Don't Be Shy coming out of it might actually be the problem. It's tough to really pinpoint. I looked at the sequence real quick to see if I thought it could be better with a quick switch-a-roo but it would require a lot of moving things around so you probably ended up with the best case anyway.
