The first disc of ALT is actually their first release for Thrill Jockey, that immediately went out of print (one run only). And then the Mike Watt song was something that was supposed to be included on that release, but didn’t make it to the printer in time.
I’m actually working on a Tortoise mix for Ruddo that leans heavily on every other album of theirs, because ALT is a mixed bag and TNT is something I think should be experience more as an albimZ Happy to share it with you when it’s finished.
You're the man now, dog

Oh yeah, sorry, it is the third disc. You’re sure about ST coming first though? I think the TJ site says differently. Funny that Wiki doesn’t even mention this.
Pretty sure. Tortoise was their first full-length, and came out in 1994. Rhythms, Resolutions, & Clusters was a remix of that album, and was released in 1995. Here's what I found on Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoise_(band)#Discography
I look forward to your Tortoise mix, even though I'm pretty familiar with their discography. Do you have any particular theme you're going for?

Nah, just trying to make something that flows nicely and that I think will serve as a good point of entry for Ruddo. Opening with Seneca. Closing with Everglade. Everything in between is still up in the air.

Sorry, Brett’s totally right, I was confusing that with A Lonesome Sound. From Thrill Jockey:
Thrill Jockey thrill 006 - 1992 This was the first Tortoise release on Thrill Jockey. Lonesome Sound is a cover of a Freakwater song. Originally issued on black vinyl, this was briefly re-issued in 2000 on clear vinyl.

My history with the band is sort of spotty: Heard the UNKLE remix of DJed, bought TNT when it was new, then completely fell off. Downloaded a zip of their entire discography between BoA and The Catastrophist, made my way through it, but ultimately settled on the following albums as being indispensable:
MNLWND TNT Standards It’s All Around You The Catastrophist
So funny that WM should bring them up today, because I was just working on that mix last night and was thinking that some of the stuff on BoA is more compelling than I initially thought. And then discovering Ice Ice Gravy last night was a real treat.

I'm determined to take my rightful spot in your top 5 musical soulmate list.

Great opener and closer. Probably the most appropriate ones for a mix.
Phew! Those first few bars of Seneca are pretty undeniable for an opening track, but I’m happy to hear you approve of Everglade. I LOVE that song, but I’m not really sure how other Tortoise fans feel about it.
Tangentially related, my one gripe about The Catastrophist is how it sort of peters out with 3-4 mellow, melodic songs.
Also, is I Set My Face To The Hillside as great as I think it is, and therefore worthy of a spot on the mix? It’s like Everglade in that I adore it, but not sure how it might connect for newbs.

It felt funny not putting you in there. But as much as we both love SY, YLT, Malkmus, and Wilco, those are also pretty universally loved bands. Start sending me some experimental or minimalist recs, then we’ll talk.

Oh yeah, I love "Everglade." TNT is pretty much flawless in my esteem, and one of my favorite albums. The last four tracks run together beautifully. As for "I Set My Face to the Hillside," it might be my favorite Tortoise tune, and I'd say it definitely belongs in a mix. It's a great bridge between two of their influences, with the Spanish guitar/Morricone first half and the nods to Reichian minimalism in the second.

Shellac Peel Sessions (1994/2004) for an official release today. I’ve had the ‘94 sessions for years and they are terrific. Friend played the ‘04 sessions for me once but I’m excited to revisit.
