I'm still a little confused how this works. So, we pick our teams and then everyone votes on who they think has the best team? How are people supposed to vote? Based on most fun games? Any other criteria? My idea was better.

How about we make the criteria this: Vote on what group of games you'd most rather have with you if you had to have a limited number of games with you for the rest of your life.

You'll want to draft a team based on which games you think will be the most competitive. So even though I have a soft spot for Ballz 3D, it would probably be smarter for me to pick Sonic the Hedgehog, because more people would be apt to vote for that against Mario. Make sense?

makes sense trag but what i want to know is: how will people be apt to vote?
this was somewhat of a failure in the numetal tournament as some people voted on what they considered most numetal and others voted on what they thought was the best song.
guidelines would be useful
so how about we guide voters to vote on the group of games they'd prefer to have if they could only have a group for the rest of their lives

You're overthinking it a little. People will vote on the "best" game each match. Whether they are choosing their personal favorite, or what they think was objectively the better game, will be up to them. Like, I would vote for Battlefield 1 over Halo if I were picking my favorite between the two; but it'd be hard to argue that Halo was the more popular game, so that could impact how that round plays out.
We did a Simpsons Song Tourney a while back, it was my first time participating, and I screwed myself with my picks because I mostly chose songs that I liked the most. It made for good posting, but I was repeatedly beat out by the more widely-loved songs.
No matter what, subjectivity is going to creep into voting. Draft a team of games you will like and you think others like. It's not for money or for glory. It's for fun.
