What is the point of this LED strip other than it looks cool?

Reduces eye strain and improves black levels.

Is the effect worth it with ambient lighting on in other parts of the room?

I like it, yeah. It’s still effective. But, again, only for SDR content. And I’m sure it would depend on your TV. I can’t imagine there would be any point with an OLED, for example, considering they’re low nit and have perfect black levels already.

All turning up brightness will do is fuck up your black levels. What you want is probably to turn up your backlight (if it’s SDR; backlight should already be maxed out for HDR).

Yeah, don't mess with your brightness. It will wash everything out or introduce a lot of visual noise. What is your video source for these very dark movies? Some apps have a tendency to be darker than others (HBO Go on PS4 for example).

Generally Itunes, netflix etc...

Now that i think about it...this is more of a problem during the day when i have that fucking sun glare coming through the windows. I think it was most of oceans 8 that i couldnt see a goddamn thing. Not that i really missed anything but....

Got my LED strip.

It's really cool, but the USB port on my TV is always active, so I have to turn the LEDs on and off.

I'd rather they just turn on when I turn the TV on.

That's what mine does. Took awhile to get the fam on board with the strip but now they like it. Or maybe they stopped complaining...

My TV is from 2009 so I'm looking at replacing it soon with a 4k set. Can't wait to see what deals are out for Black Friday.

I recommend having Day and Night picture settings. My Day setting has the backlight turned way up for this very reason. Every other setting is the same however.

Yeah I change my SDR backlight all the time depending on the content and time of day. Unfortunately you really can’t just set it and forget it.

My sweet 59" Samsung 3D plasma bit the dust a few weeks ago...tried to have it repaired but it was a no go, so I picked up a 65" Samsung 7 Series. My first UHD set, and I have to say I'm impressed but not as blown away as I was with my first HDTV. Anyhoo, to the point.

A few years back I bought a Pioneer Elite VSX-44 A/V receiver that's been fantastic. It's networked and AirPlay enabled, so streaming from phones/iPads is seamless. I upgraded to that because the Onkyo I had prior didn't do 3D passthrough. Now I find that the Pioneer doesn't do HDR passthrough. Not a big deal, as the PS4, AppleTV and cable box I run into it aren't 4K. The PS4 does have an HDR setting, but unfortunately I can't turn it on.

So...question is, is adding HDR to the PS4 enough of a reason to upgrade my A/V receiver? I'm thinking about Red Dead 2 and Battlefield V...I would really like to play those and be getting the most out of the TV, even if it's not 4K.

Unless it’s a PS4 Pro, I would say no, don’t worry about it. I’m pretty sure the standard PS4’s “HDR” isn’t really even proper HDR. I’ve never gotten it to do anything on my TV.

Thanks man, good to know. Unfortunately my TV is mounted above the fireplace, with a long HDMI run through the wall and down from the ceiling, so hooking everything up to the TV directly isn’t an option, unless I want cables visible everywhere. Guess I’ll hold off on the receiver until next-gen consoles come around.

With LV here. HDR on the standard PS4 isn't worth the upgrade. It is gorgeous on the Pro however.

Goddammit! I really don't want to buy a PS4 Pro!
