Ed needs a distortion pedal for live shows and certain songs

i assumed he always had one, but i guess not:

Image

if he was worried about tripping on it or something, seems like they could prop one up on one of his speakers or something

Im really not sure what he uses for a pedal setup. He has a couple things going on but someone else may have a better idea.

He pushes the amp via volume, but doesnt have true distortion. He used to back in the mid 90's etc. Songs like corduroy and insignificance and grievance etc... would really benefit from some distortion. When he plays guitar it is usually at the top of the mix so you hear more of the brittle tone of his setup rather than Mike and Stones tasty overdrives and distortions.

You've been to a lot of shows, we get it.

I think it’s more about getting older and memories fading.

this is good insight. what would be the practical reason for no distortion pedal?

Pure speculation, I just assume it’s too much for Ed to add on to his performance. He puts his focus on vocals and connecting with the crowd, and adding pedals on top of that, plus playing, might just divide his efforts too many times. Wouldn’t be surprised if someone backstage or at the mixing board is putting predetermined effects on his guitar.

Imagine how many more lyrics he’d get wrong if he had to deal with a pedal too!

Love the studio version but very averse to a live version unless they are playing the full album in sequence.

It always seemed like a song to experience alone with headphones and no one bothering you than a 20k person singalong.

Do you think the song title "Of the Earth" was inspired by lyrics from Ben Harper's "Burn One Down"?

WELL... Do you???

Spoiler: show
Or wait, maybe Ben Harper says from the earth ... I don't know for sure.

Came out of the gas station last night to see a guy with a cane getting into his car wearing a Vote For Change Tour PJ shirt. I recognized it (since I also own one) and said, "Nice shirt." Turns out we've been to six of the same shows over the years. He'll be at Wrigley night one in the GA, same as me. He's never been to Wrigley and was really excited for the show. He said their music has played a huge role in dealing with his disability.

For as cynical as this board (and myself) can be about the band and its fans, it was really nice to have this random encounter. Really looking forward to next week's show.
