Once in awhile I'll listen to this; I'd be more excited if it wasn't placed on the new album. It doesn't feel like it's complete enough to be a first single. Maybe it's the lack of a proper bridge and that chorus. But still, that first 30-40 seconds is great. I don't see how anyone could have a problem w/ that portion of the song.
You know it's gotten bad in Pearl Jam land when the guy who didn't feel like I Got Id lived up to Pearl Jam's standards is defending the quality of 30-40 seconds of their new single.
I never understood why I Got Id was/continues to be so underrated. It's a great tune, if you ask me.
top 10 for me
Fun fact - I Got ID is one of two PJ songs that hit the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 (peaked at #7). The other one is Last Kiss (#2).
Just Breathe only made #78 but is their most successful single ever in the US (certified platinum). It became something of a crossover hit, and had they promoted it a bit more then it could easily have become bigger.
Can't Deny Me is ass.
I wonder how big Black and Betterman would become if PJ did the whole shebang and properly release them as singles with a huge video. Easily top 10 and possibly number 1 given that they were the biggest band on the planet at the time.

Good point. If they would've promoted their stuff like, say, U2 would have, they could have easily had several more big(ger) hits. Black, Daughter, Betterman for sure.

They already were uncomfortable with the level of fame and demands on them.
But had those songs been pushed and promoted to the hilt, the public would have tired really really quickly.
I’m on board with this.
On the rare occasion these days when I hear a new artist/song that I like ... maybe 2 months later I’m out becuase it’s the only fucking thing on the radio all day long and I’m totally sick of it.

Didn’t Epic want to release Black as a single, and the band/Eddie refused?
Yes...and not only that i'm sure they wanted to do a video as a Jeremy follow up.
It would have been an absolute monster of a hit.
Were there not also tales of Eddie intentionally botching Betterman in the studio during the Vs. sessions, not feeling comfortable releasing it at that stage in their careers.

I can't understand why when Eddie is writing a political song he is so passionate about it sucks so much. The lyrics are just plain bad. This song is actually pretty good live but the studio take was a very bad one and while its good live the lyrics are bad. Bushleaguer is the same.
I wish he'd go all out and just go in like Axl Rose on Get in the Ring "CMON MOTHERFUCKER! SUCK MY FUCKIN DICK!"

I mean seriously we all know what the song is about why does he have to cloud everything in multiple layers of nonsense words? Half of the lyrics mean nothing.

Pearl Jam: Here are some songs about school shootings, homelessness, abused women, and feeling isolated.
1993: Ugh, you’re so whiny. Have a little fun!
(Later)
2018: You know what topics are on my mind a lot these days?

Pearl Jam: Retirement.
At least it's relatable to where their audience is.
