The first chapter of Seeing by Jose Saramago challenges the first chapter of DeLillo's Underworld for best first chapter ever. And the ending of Seeing just caused me actual physical pain. Not even exaggerating, reading the last four pages gave me an immediate uncomfortable feeling in my chest that still persists now. Beautiful book

Good to know. Blindness is my second favorite book of all time. I've been nervous about picking up your sequel because I don't want to risk damaging Blindness.

I can understand that. Blindness is amazing

I'm officially making this the next Saramago book I read.

I just started this and I'm already in love. Rachel Kushner is fucking WRITE, y'all. And somehow, beyond any sense of reason, she keeps getting better.

Tough read so far.

Even though I disagree with everything in this book, it's a great (and quick) read.

I "satisfied the requirements of this portion of the project," which means: I don't have to defend in that setting again, but I have two weeks to make all of their recommended edits. Going to be quite busy for the next 14 days!

Have any of you ever read (or heard of) Flann O Brien / Myles na Gcopaleen?

Think you’d really enjoy it. Mordernist before it was a thing. And wildly funny.

Finished The Mars Room. It was really good. I didn't ultimately like it quite as much as Flamethrowers, but I did like it more than Telex From Cuba, I think. Rachel Kushner is amazing.

Not sure what I'll tackle next. I have about a half dozen options waiting for me on the shelf at home.

So I started listening to Blindsight yesterday. I'm going to copypasta from another thread here: So far it's just boring and I hate all of the characters and I'm roughly 60% through. They keep talking about how the aliens aren't aliens and there's some thoughts on self that seem interesting when other people talk about them in reviews but I'm not pulling it from the book yet. I assume there's something in the next 40% that really pulls it all together though.

Reading Goodreads tells me that there are a lot of people who think it's one of the best hard sci-fi books written in the last decade (as of their review, at least). It also tells me that there are a lot of people who are getting exactly what I'm getting out of it, so I don't feel like I'm necessarily missing something in my reading. Or listening. Whatever. At any rate, the book makes itself hard to read because it keeps switching between the past and present. Usually when media does that it's because something happened in the past the is relevant to the present. Not here.

And there are vampires here. To be 100%: they are genetically reincarnated vampires who are predators from the Pleistocene period. I give you the transhuman bit and the aliens but then you throw in that vampires are real and they're from the Ice Age? Ugh. Also: who writes a person with no empathy in the main role? Are you supposed to enjoy this sociopathic POV?

On the other hand it was pushing 100 for the duration of my bike ride and maybe I am being harsh on it due to heat exhaustion. However reading all of the reviews from people who have the same problem getting anything out of the book makes me think it's the story's fault.

Looking for a book to read on vacation next week. Ideally fiction, 250-350 pages, pulpy but not trashy, along the lines of this https://www.amazon.com/Descent-Novel-Tim-Johnston/dp/161620477X or this https://www.amazon.com/Beartown-Novel-Fredrik-Backman-ebook/dp/B01KG5GQDS or this https://www.amazon.com/Lake-Woods-Tim-OBrien/dp/061870986X. Interesting plot, strong characters, breezy writing. No Stephen King. Please and thank you.

Great, easy summer reading. You'll either be hooked by the first page or you won't be.

Have you read the other Backman book "A Man Called Ove"? I laughed, I cried, I watched the movie and it was alright.
