I must admit that recent listening has proven "Bawitdaba" to be extremely effective for what it is. That "MY NAME IS KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID...KID R O C K!" intro is just glorious, fist-bumping, blood-pumping fury, and it is magnificent.
I have a sort of begrudging admiration for Kid Rock's persona, especially here. His "trailer park pimp" aesthetic reminds me a bit of Die Antwoord's Zef - ignoring wealth and "fancy" things, and instead choosing to embrace the sort of lowlife panache of your poverty, making it into its own fashion and style.
I mean, come on, that video is just perfect. Kid Rock rapping in a trailer park as dirtbikes fly overhead?
An enigma of a man shaped hole in the wall between reality and the soul of the devil.

Its like the real band never showed up for the video, so they just got their film school interns to sing karaoke. I can't overemphasize how much their lack of style or presense gets on my nerves. This shouldn't be allowed.
One thing that really kills this genre of music for me is the lyrics -- an endless barrage of vague constructs describing the singer's own pain:
Why does it feel like night today? Something in the air's not right today Why am I so uptight today? Paranoia's all I got left I don't know what stressed me first Or how the pressure was fed But I know just what it feels like To have a voice in the back of my head Like a face that I hold inside A face that awakes when I close my eyes A face watches every time I lie A face that laughs every time I fall (It watches everything) So I know now when it's time to sink or swim That the face inside is hearing me Right beneath my skin
The language is just so dull and is so repetitive from song to song. It's extremely tedious to me.
Kid Rock is an exception to this within this genre. "Bawitdaba" has a DB Cooper reference in it. Easy vote for the Kid -- he remains something of an anomaly among this group of musicians for me.
