Catching up on a few albums of 2018 over the weekend:

Courtney Barnett -- I miss the quirky vignettes from the first album, but overall I think this one's a step forward -- sharper melodies, and a broader musical range in general. Shades of Pavement, Sonic Youth, Nirvana -- all that '90's smart-slacker stuff, with a few pinches of alt-country thrown in for good measure. She's one of my favorites.

Beach House -- I can't imagine ever disliking anything this band does, but I admit I don't think any of their last three albums come anywhere close to "Teen Dream" or "Bloom." This new one has some complex outer layers that I may just not have broken through yet, but after two listens I find myself wishing the songwriting was a bit more compelling.

Plus all the GOOD Music stuff. A+'s all around. Looking forward to Kamasi Washington on Friday too.

never heard of Houndmouth

I only know their 2015 record "Little Neon Limelight." And I really love that record. I think you'd dig it.

This new song is pretty far away from what's on LNL. It's not, in and of itself, a bad song, per se. But it feels weird and unearned coming from what little I know about Houndmouth.

i'll listen to that and report back

not off to a good start here, durds. shouldn't i just be listening to Band Of Horses?

track 2: shouldn't i just be listening to Valerie June?

tracks 3-4: wtf is going on? i feel like this is a compilation album and i've heard 4 different bands now

And you don't like that?!

i just don't like these songs :haha:

They lack their own true identity as now seen by their new songs. The first houndmouth album is enjoyable but clearly been done a million times before. Its very throw back. That being said - The songs are enjoyable and they were great live.

Now that I have had the chance to listen a few times, I am really enjoying Fantastic Negrito’s Please Don’t Be Dead. Similar to The Last Days of Oakland but with a few more rippin’ guitar solos. A great mesh of rock, blues, soul, and whatever other genre you want to place on it. He has a great way of sounding both familiar and fresh at the same time. Probably my favorite so far this year.

I liked and still spin Last Days of Oakland. Will def check this one out. Sounds like more of all the bits I already like. Sweet.

Yes. That was how I learned about them as well. I have since really enjoyed all the releases so far (the EP, Last Days of Oakland, and Please Don’t Be Dead). I would love to see them live as the main act at some point.

Based on a recent podcast, I'm gonna dive into:

1. In a Poem Unlimited - U.S. Girls
2. Dirty Computer - Janelle Monae
3. Freedom - Amen Dunes

I started the U.S. Girls record and I really dig the opening track. I think I'm gonna end up loving that record. We'll see.

Listening to the EP that was hidden inside the new Kamasi Washington album. This cover of "Ooh Child" is great.
