I think it was a conscious choice to not over market this film and saturate the public with SW. This film will be seen by all those who have watched the others but as there's no progression and this is merely spakfilla, it's not essential opening weekend fare. The drive for EP 8 and 9 is to see it before it gets spoilered.

I think it’s SW fatigue and no one really wants to see a film about Han Solo without Harrison Ford.

It may make Lucasfilm rethink any ideas they may have had behind closed doors about someone new in the role of Indiana Jones as well. I’m not saying that happened, but I’m sure the idea has been tossed around.

I have a difficult time believing 'fatigue' narratives until it happens for multiple movies in a row

I mean, it could turn out that you're right, but I don't know that you can make that case yet

I didn't place a guess but I would have thought it would have broken $100 mill.

Fatigue is about diminishing returns due to over saturation, not about liking the direction of a product.

Apparently iger told the Disney’s shareholders they never expect these standalones to make as much as the saga films. That’s understandable. Both standalones to date have had huge production difficulties as we know.

But the marketing (and marketing budget) for this was purposefully kept low key. Less so than rogue one I believe. They knew avengers and deadpool would own the summer so it’s not like they made a massive mistake unknowingly. I’d say it was a calculated risk.
Cos now we have 18 months with absolutely no Star Wars.

So by the time ep 9 rolls around well probably have solid info on the tv series and next standalone / Rians trilogy / GOT guys trilogy.

Breathing room to let people want it again. This is all really calculated and measured I’d say.

I can agree with the last part, having that long for people to get back into the desire for another movie, but not marketing a movie (Solo) that had a big budget? That doesn't seem right.

It’s budget swelled cos of what happened though with the firing and hiring and reshoots.
There’s no way on the world all those shareholders are going to say no and stop making them if this one stumbles. Somebody somewhere will ask why was the decision made to release it against two massive films. I’d love to hear the answer. But it’s not like they’re losing money to avengers. They own that too.
Am seeing a lot of people online now saying they’re refusing to go see it cos Fuck Disney.
Their loss. It’s a pebble in the road it won’t aftect future plans for more films I don’t think.

Don’t know about that but wouldn’t be shocked if it made around the same next week? I’m optimistic but it doesn’t really matter to me either way. It’ll definitely break even over the course of release i reckon

Man I would have been spot on if we'd stopped this at $102m.

Then why did you bet so high, 137 million? May is not an usual time for a SW movie release. They are diluting the shit out of this franchise and will squeeze it till it bleeds every morsel of money it can and then sell it off. Then, 50 years from now someone will reboot the original trilogy and milk that ass for more money because it can because of people like you, dime.
