I like the scene where the theme kicks in when they first see the dinosaurs. It's just a combination of awe and majesty and wonder. I know that actors act but again that was one of the first movies where they truly had to act against nothing. "Imagine you see this vista" and you could believe they saw it.

It truly is one of the most majestic scenes in all of cinema

The part that gets me is when Grant says, “They’re moving in herds. They do move in herds.” You don’t see the joy of scientific discovery portrayed in film like that very often. You feel how much he truly loves what he’s devoted his life to, and you feel how profound and beautiful that moment is for him.

So much of what makes the scene work is Williams' score. The acting is totally fine (I think Dern succeeds far more than Neill, personally) but it's that music. Just remarkable.

Sure. It's a silent, black-and-white horror short about a guy who commits a sort of controlled suicide after his wife dies so he can find her in the afterlife.
LV, please reconsider and show us your student film.

Also, what prompted this?
I'm inching my way towards dabbling in film:
-Loving the Cinematic Storytelling book I've been reading; -Watching all sorts of films with a new eye for technical aspects; -Working on writing in the screenplay format (my silly "Iconic Film Scene" thread was a way for me to start dusting off the cobwebs); -Had an hour-long phone call the other night with my old friend who works as a cinematographer in Los Angeles; -Am now looking into the film studies fall program at MSU, trying to understand if there's a way I can take/audit individual classes around my work schedule.
Anyway, I seemed to remember an RMer posting their student film back when I first started posting regularly. I did a search and found Argo's smokestack film, and happened across your post.
And if it wasn't a student film, how did you pull it together? Did you just rent/borrow equipment? What kind? Did you have a crew of some sort, or was it just yourself?

I co-wrote and co-directed it with my best friend, who also played the lead. We shot in three locations we had free access to, used a camera we already had, and used friends as actors. Took like two or three days to film and another few days to edit. We never released it because we never got someone to compose a score we were satisfied with (kind of a big deal when it’s silent).
