The Florida Project. Latest in a long line of the "unflinching gaze on America's poor" genre (see also Vernon, Florida; Kids; Gummo; George Washington; American Honey).

Everything is super visceral despite mostly static camera work. Performances are excellent, though i wonder how many are even professional actors? My only problem with Dafoe's character is that no way would a guy that nice work that job in real life.

The twist ending was fine. Not the brilliant stroke other reviewers had made it out to be, but it was novel and effective.

Do they still make Dogma 95 films? This likely could have qualified.

I really liked TFP, im a big big fan of Sean´s work. Those kids were not professionals, and the girl´s mother was a instagram celebrity...so, very impressive.

Dont agree with the Dafoe view..why not? I know wonderful people working in shitty places.....as for the ending i thought it was a letdown. He chooses to go full fairy tale just when i needed to see the real ending. Still, great movie.

I guess you're right, there are good people doing shitty jobs...But still, his kindness felt a little too big for his station in life. Don't get me wrong, Dafoe played the part terrifically; I would just expect to see a few more warts on that sort of person in real life.

I dug the ending.

Spoiler: show
Not amazing, but I thought it was an effective resolution given their seeming proximity, yet obvious inaccessibility, to the nearby Disneyworld; obviously there's no way their lives turned out great. It sort of reminded me of how at the end of No Country For Old Men, Tommy Lee Jones's brother suggests it's "vanity" to expect an inherently sad story to somehow have a happy ending.

Spoiler: show
My main concern was that i watched an entire film with the ¨real ¨life of these kids, and just in the end for some reason he chooses to go all fairy mental with us. I needed to see the real stuff..so the kid realized he was going to be far way? show me what happens in the ¨real¨world. Not that weird photograph montage of Disney

Spoiler: show
Thays exactly why it worked, i think. We've been watching this train wreck of a childhood unfold with bright, happy colors and in the shadow of Walt Disney; it's been more palatable than, say, Gummo, because of the setting. A lurid "here's the kid in foster care" ending would have been too much, and wouldn't have served any dramatic purpose. His chosen ending is better, because it's almost like a message to the viewer saying 'Trust me, you don't want to see how this really turns out.'" Now that i think about it more, i might actually be starting to love that ending. The hyperfast camera work was a nice touch, given all the sugar the kids ate throughout the film.

I hate Billy Wilder, Richard Linklater, and Akira Kurosawa. And Phantom Thread. So...yeah. Sunset Blvd isn't TERRIBLE but I'm not a fan.

The Breaker Upperers - was alright for a small NZ film

:?: Isn't she, like, an Oscar-winning A-list actress who likely commands upwards of $10M/film?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Ever since she got ugly and played a prostitute/murderer she's been considered one of the bestest.

If she's only making 10 million a film that's fucking criminal.

My point was that she's a known "star" but she doesn't get enough credit as an actress. She's quite possibly the best actress working today. People should talk about her they way they talk about Streep.

This would explain my only other gripe with the film: The annunciation and audio were both pitiful. We had to watch with the closed-captioning on! Given that they weren't professional actors, I'll fault the director for not taking a more rigorous approach in post. I get that all their mumbling and talking over each other added to the realism, but at a certain point I need to be able to understand what they're actually saying.

I did not have these same issues. How did you watch the movie?

Watched Clint Eastwood's A Perfect World today. Holy fuck, I was not expecting what I got. What an amazing movie. Complicated, uncomfortable, dangerous - it challenges the viewer to engage in complex, nuanced empathy in order to understand the disquieting, unpredictable actions of the characters, particularly Kevin Costner's. The whole final act is a powerhouse that left me in tears. Goddamn, what a movie. The kind of thing I can't imagine being made now (at least not on the same scale).

You havent seen that one? might be my favorite from Clint. I was talking about that movie the other day because i saw it as a kid and it made such an impact back then. Costner´s acting....so cool and calm and at the same time so fucking violent. Incredible piece of art.
Kinda reminds me of Josh Brolin in No Country.

I like it a lot. Theron is magnificent. The best actress of her generation? Its such a powerful force i cant even think about a frame without her.
About the ending though...

Spoiler: show
Im kinda bummed with the route they gave us..the whole yeah, tully is me as a young girl...i think it was even more powerful if she was real. Its still a very good view on maternity and women...But having her being real would have been more powerful

Same. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and I loved it. But I just don't remember any specifics at this point.

Well luckily my library had a copy and it's ready for me to go pick it up after work. Woo.

And for some reason I kept imagining Michael Keaton in the main role while I was reading the wiki so to scroll back up and see the poster and it's Kevin Costner took me aback for a second.
