Finally listened to this album today on a bit of a drive. I enjoyed it, particularly the opener (which dime posted directly above).
I mentioned earlier that when I saw him in 2016 he did a magnificent version of ACDC's Down-payment Blues. Well, listeninhg today, again, particularly Roll on Slow, for the first time I noticed how much his voice sometimes reminds me of Bon Scott.
Greater praise I cannot give,
ACDC are his first love Higgs. He loves Bon.
Highlight for me on this new one is ‘one of us must lose’
I’d take an entire album of that if I could. Reminiscent of some of his older songs with the frames but such a beautiful haunting melody.

New songs being played live. Great setlist. The story about rowing from Ireland to Spain in a tiny little kanoo is fucking brilliant and worth it alone
Glen Hansard's performance recorded by WFUV radio last week in NYC can be found here. Nice selection of songs and interview with a special appearance by David Keenan as well.

looking forward to seeing his show next saturday. but i'm not feeling this new record. roll on slow is pretty great - though i'm not fond of the added horns on this and the few other tracks - but not much else has kept my interest. i'll give it some attentive listens this week in prep for the show, but i'm hoping the songs will impress me more with glen's live energy propelling them and (if what dime said earlier is still the case) in their stripped down form. i haven't ever experienced a bad glen performance, and i certainly don't expect that to happen next week, but i just wish i was more into these new songs to get me more hyped.

I haven’t gone back to it anything like Didn’t he ramble. Which is my outright favourite thing he’s done.
You’ve seen him before. So I don’t need to say anything. He won’t let you down.

So Rufus wainwright joined Glen last night for a few songs. Someone sent me a video of them singing Joni’s Case of you and I’ve been a sobbing mess all day. You had to pick that song lads. Seriously.
High Hope
Time Will Be the Healer
Winning Streak
My Little Ruin
When Your Mind's Made Up
Bird of Sorrow (GH on piano - solo)
Shelter Me (GH on piano - solo)
Vigilante Man
Carrying Songs - Moya Cannon (Poem read by GH)
Way Back When
Wedding Ring
Her Mercy (with Moji Abiola on vocals)
*There was a 15 min interval
McCormack's Wall (GH on piano - solo)
Lowly Deserter
One of Us Must Lose
Song of Good Hope
Candles - Rufus Wainwright acapella
Case of You (Joni Mitchell) - Glen and Rufus duet
Who By Fire (Leonard Cohen)
Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen)
So Long Marianne (off mic at front of stage with everyone with Rufus and Glen swapping verses)

well, he played a grand total of ONE new album song at this show, so maybe he isn't all into the new album, either. and the show wasn't stripped down, he had an 11-piece band in tow with 3 horn players, 3 string players, 2 keyboardists, bassist, guitarist, and drummer. but that was fine, they were all very good, and the strings especially were a nice addition.
This Gift Love Don't Leave Me Waiting Roll On Slow / Gloria (Them cover) Winning Streak My Little Ruin When Your Mind's Made Up (The Swell Season song) Bird of Sorrow Shelter Me Vigilante Man (Woody Guthrie cover) Didn't He Ramble Way Back in the Way Back When Lovevolve (Rob Bochnik cover) Wedding Ring Her Mercy (with 'Sometimes It Snows In April' (Prince) interpolation) Gigantic (Pixies cover) Falling Slowly (The Swell Season song) Fitzcarraldo (The Frames song) ----- McCormack's Wall Rocky Road to Dublin ([traditional] cover) Lowly Deserter Gold (Interference cover) The Auld Triangle (Brendan Behan cover)
he was his usual endearing self and his storytelling was especially engaging tonight. not too much emphasis on it being st. patricks day (which i didn't even realize until a couple days ago), though he did mention the parade going by his hotel waking him up and i assume 'rocky road to dublin' - done off-mic with the band all at the lip of the stage - was his way of marking the day. 'gigantic' seemed an improv choice so he could sing 'saint paul, saint paul let's have a ball' a couple times, but that and the woody guthrie cover with updated, relevant lyrics were the musical highlights of the show for me. i'd seen most of the rest of the set at his last show here in town, so that was really the only disappointment. eddie's name came up a couple times, the first time prompted by someone in the audience, and glen dedicated 'falling slowly' to him and marketa.

He played rocky road to Dublin? I know he can he just sang it for us at dinner a few weeks ago but it’s a bastard of a song to sing. You can’t get your breath and the lyrics are impossible. That’s a really really rough one to sing at a gig.
My favourite version(and for anyone doesn’t onow the song, you might actually) is in Sherlock Holmes. When Robert Downey jr is fighting the guy in the ring. Think it might be the opening scene.
