20 years ago tonight I saw Pearl Jam play a tiny outdoor venue in Hawaii. It was the back yard of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and it was the first of two warm up dates before their Aussie Yield tour. Of course I went both nights; the second was the better show but the first one was the only time I have ever been back stage for anything. Watched Mudhuney from side stage standing between Ed & Jeff. I saw Ed standing there holding his blue notebook so I walked up next him but never said anything. Jeff walked beside me a few minutes later and we wound up talking a little basketball.

Was reliving my favorite Pearl Jam show the other day., at least that I attended at MSG 5/21/10. That second encore was just unbelievable (Wasted Reprise, Better Man/Save It For Later, Black, The Real Me, Hunger Strike w/Ben Bridwell, Alive, Kick Out the Jams, Yellow Ledbetter/Star Spangled Banner).

I remembered really liking the Touring Band 2000 version of "Betterman" so I looked it up on Youtube
1- This version is still really good
2- I never really noticed Jeff playing along in the intro (starting on "he opens the door..."). Is this how they always used to play it? When did Jeff stop playing in the intro? It's been just Ed for the last decade+, right?

Ed went into a bit of a songwriting funk from late 1996 until he broke through the writer's block during the Binaural sessions, didn't he? Like he wrote MFC in Nov/Dec 1996, then went mostly simple, silly, or short songs until sometime in the middle of 1999. The outliers I can think are lyrics for some of Yield (DTE, ATY, In Hiding, Faithfull), but that's it.
Alternative Nation published our interview with original Smashing Pumpkins bassist D’arcy Wretzky last week, but the interview was edited down so we could have a concise piece. Our conversation with D’arcy actually lasted for nearly four hours, and here are some stories D’arcy told that didn’t fit into the interview article. I mentioned that with Smashing Pumpkins’ reunion Billy Corgan appeared to be wanting to get the band on a competitive level with Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters, two of the biggest touring acts that are still going from the 90’s alternative rock scene.
D’arcy said, “With those two bands, everybody knows that the Foo Fighters is Dave [Grohl]. How many people do you know who can name any other members of Pearl Jam besides Eddie Vedder? I fucking love, I love all of the members except for Stone [Gossard]. I fucking hate Stone, he’s an asshole. They’re all really nice, except for Stone.”

I'd love to hear PJ cover/reinterpret(with same production value) several songs off the new Decemberists album.
The Decemberists - Starwatcher
Makes me want EV to get back to writing lyrics this kind of way. Odd 'cause I very rarely think of PJ covering other bands and the thought hasn't crossed my mind with any other Decemberists albums.
