I'm neither a Lucas fanboy or especially into the 50s, and I enjoyed the movie. It's not one of those movies with big cliffhangers, murders, and crazy stuff happening. It's just one night in 1962. Has a great mood to it.
It would be better with some cliffhangers and murders though.
Imagine if Bridget Fonda killed Matt Dillon in Singles, or Matthew Broderick killed Jeffrey Jones in Ferris Bueller. Maybe Carrie Fisher could have killed Mia Farrow in Hannah And Her Sisters. Would have been interesting, but totally different movies.

Then Ferris Bueller's Day Off would be the greatest film in American cinematic history!

Do you think the film works on its own merits or do you have to be a 1950's fetishist and/or be prone to bouts of nostalgia to really appreciate the movie.

Neither. It's exactly as Anders said. It tells the story of some high school friends' last night together before leaving for college and the service, etc... It's told well and has a great mood to it.

i show up and hope for the best
generally i go saturday mornings first viewing.
i have a general idea of what i want to see and keep an eye on those dates.
naturally the marvel moves are a must as are the DC ones
i grew up on the old king kong and godzilla movies so i try to catch those.
throw in some regular action adventure ones and im pretty good to go
i think the last "date" movie i saw was the martian
im not against seeing other movies im just not as excited
directors or producers do nothing for me, does the movie look interesting or not to me is all i go by (could be why i enjoyed matthew brodderick in his godzilla)
