I don’t think it is strange that we hold Pearl Jam (and f.ex. Marvel or Star Wars) to a high standard. If I release a song on RM, the expectation would be very low. I might get applauded if I even know an instrument well. Some people love Stone’s solo work, but few hold his solo stuff to the highest standard. Pearl Jam is one of the great bands of all time, and we all want them to release material that can match their prime.
People can hate or love District 9, but it usually gets a pass for being fun and original. The Last Jedi however is matched up against The Empire Strikes Back.
Here, a good reason why I think the band is "slow" these days. Bottom line, they're getting old, I'd bet it's just as much physical as anything else, vocal chords, back issues, all that good 'old people" stuff, in addition to kids and family ... really no different than any other normal human being.. They're probably looking at keeping it slow, doing bigger baseball stadium shows so they don't either have to retire earlier than they'd like or just flame out on pain killers to ease their back and hip pains or whatever like Prince and Petty. Plus, I doubt they're hurting for money, so when they do go tour and record it's just for the love of it and also raising money for their causes. And, I don't foresee some big "retirement" cause I think they genuinely love playing and they'd be miserable if they totally hung it up. Taking even a year off from being in front of anyone is probably hard, they love the experience of playing to us crazy folks. As far as just being a studio band I wonder if it's just economics or just maintaining band relations since it's probably much easier to play shows than decide on a creative direction in a market where the album has less value and guitar rock in general is on the wane. I look to their peers in RHCP, Green Day, U2, Metallica in releasing music every 5-6 years or so. If they release 2-3 records over the next 15 years w/ some batches of short tour legs I'd call it a success.
