I think some (most) of it is the EU set up some really good (and terrible, let's be real) stories for these characters. People were invested in those stories and the character development in them and then Disney came in and said, "nah, we're good" and made a lot of people upset.

It could well be these two lads are making films to be shown on this new streaming service, like Netflix&the Irishman, not for broader / general cinematic release.

Wow, how many new films are they going to make?
Unknown. They've been signed for "a series of films." That's all we know, so far.
Sorry, I meant Disney, how many will it make total as it expands the franchise, understanding the number will depend on how much $$ it can rake in per film.

Rian Johnson has a trilogy coming. D&D have a "series of films." The Ob-Wan movie is still in play. There will be an Ep 9. I believe Lucasfilm when they say that their goal is a Star Wars film per year for the foreseeable future. I've heard someone say that people who are alive today will not live long enough to see the "final" Star Wars film.
Disney paid $4 billion for Lucasfilm and after three films, they've more than made their money back. I can't believe Disney has any intention of stopping any time soon.

Bring on the Star Wars's!!! I'll take 'em all, good or bad. I think I'd maybe like it if SW became "just another sci-fi series," maybe then I'd stop seeing so many dicknoses with SW shirts on.

that doesnt surprise me. this service will be aiming for a younger demographic/family friendly content. Deadpool and Frozen dont go great together. and disney has a history of using seperate brands for more adult content

So the ‘series of films’ is actually for the streaming service and not for general realse ?
Disney's streaming service will debut Fall 2019, no price details yet, no R-rated content (no surprise there) "The goal in the first year is to generate four to five original movies, and five TV series" one of which will most likely be Star Wars related
Sounds like the Benioff movies will hit the theaters: Disney did not give a timeline for when these new Benioff and Weiss-penned films will hit theaters. On an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the two men had approached the studio with an idea a while ago. Even though the duo made their name in television, Iger said they were not interested in doing something on the small screen.
“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are ‘Star Wars’ based,” said Iger. “To my knowledge they didn’t express interest about a series.”
Iger was mum on any plot details except to say that the writers and producers are “…focused on a point of time in the ‘Star Wars’ mythology.”
