I've got an unfortunate feeling
we'll be let down
Pearl Jam will disappoint again
with all the new songs coming out
What they've taken is more than a vow
Their taking 5 star songs again and throwing them on a burning pile yeah yeah hay hay
And to the fans they are saying
Mind Your Manners
I caught myself believing I needed Lightning Bolt
and if its out there somewhere we sure could use it now
Tried my patience, my patience tried
Ten, Yield, No Code and I'm done and it makes me want to cry
And to the fans they are saying

Outtakes are playing...
Self-realized in two thousand and three
May not be another hit may not matter as much to me
right around the corner could be bigger than we think

Problem is the songs won't get better - the versions I've heard are pretty clean live versions of the songs and we can assume that they are being played as arranged on the album and recently rehearsed.

I remember hearing Red Mosquito, Lukin and Brain of JFK before they were studio versions and I loved them and then loved the studio versions. Some songs do work better as studio only songs but you can't polish a turd - some dripping water, a hot Asian playing violin and thunder noises won't make that much of a difference.

Welcome back. I'm pretty sure there are links and streams within this thread.

I think both are solid songs. Neither is a turd.
I don't think the studio will elevate them to greatness but it could account for .5 to a point increase in my rating.

The songs don't need to get better; they need to be improved by instrumental and arrangement choices as well as production quality. I don't buy the argument that they can't get better in the studio. Any of Pearl Jam's greatest songs can be thoroughly diminished live, and they are, frequently. Everyone's seen shit live versions of their favourite song and thought WTF? The songs are the songs in a basic sense, but you (along with everyone else, it seems) are thoroughly underestimating how a song can be improved or ruined depending on their studio choices. I don't think for a second that every minute detail of the live version will carry over to the studio version, and I think other things will be added to the studio version which are impossible to replicate live. Why? Because that's always the case. For example, they never play that lead / arpeggio part in RVM anymore, they just thrash around on the chords. And that lead part absolutely makes the song, but it's unique to the studio version. We simply have no idea what they'll do in the studio to improve any of this stuff.

Well, to start with I don't think any of these songs are 'turds'. That may be where we differ. We have OK songs that may become good or bad songs in the studio. That's true of any song. I think that many Pearl Jam songs become awful when played live. Again, that's because you're giving them too much credit as live players. They have been better in the studio for a long time now, and live versions are just not an accurate gauge of a song's quality anymore.

As for 'We can assume that they are being played as arranged on the album and recently rehearsed', where do you get this from? I don't assume any of that, because as I said, PJ don't play anything live in a way which is faithful to the studio version.

You wouldn't think they would have rehearsed brand new songs before debuting them to 40,000 people and knowing that they will be strewn across the internet within a matter of seconds?

I'm also not sure of songs where there is such a difference between live and studio. I can think of a few examples such as Low Light but in terms of recent output the stuff on Avocado mostly sounded better live - Backspacer was crap to begin with but the songs still come across live. The example you give of RVM, I understand that there is a marginally different arrangement, but RVM still sounds awesome live and if Lightning Bolt was the equivalent of that then nobody would be saying it was a 3 star song.

I'm not saying there won't be differences - I just don't think people's 'star ratings' will change much on hearing a studio version.

'Recently rehearsed' is only part of what you said though. And no, I have no idea when they rehearsed this song and neither do you. They obviously didn't rehearse it will enough to get Brendan O'Brien's sound levels right, and Ed frequently screws up lyrics and the guitarists frequently don't play exactly what they would in the studio. I want to hear Boom's organ part more clearly. All of that is important to the song.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I don't think PJ do many good things live anymore, you do. You don't think there are vast differences between studio and live. I do. Personally, on that at least, I just don't think you're listening that carefully. (And no, I don't think RVM sounds awesome live... I think it loses nearly all of what made it great when played live.) People's star ratings won't change much (.5 or 1 point is all we can expect), but I can assure you they will change, and if these songs are mostly at 2 or 3 / 5 anyway (as they are for me), then that extra point will be crucial for their long-term enjoyment. It's not like I'm needing 1 star songs to become 5 star songs.

No. It pretty much takes both those songs combined to equate to one fully formed dollop of poop.

If the start sounds like wishlist, and the chorus sounds like all night, and the guitars sound not like shit, and ed sounds not like shit, it could gain one shiny point.

I think I said it before and it's hard to think this will be the case because it it a title track; if LB is slated to be more of a MFC in terms of the composition of the record as opposed to being its given to fly I will have no issue with the song. I don't like getting these track both live or in a vacuum from the record as a whole because I put stock into the weight that each song is supposed to carry compared to the others. Apart from the opening minute I think LB is a good song. I will like it even more if it ends up being one of the lighter songs on the album. My reasoning is not without its flaws and I admit that but it's like Sometimes or Of the Girl. Not stellar songs on their own but I live what they do on their respective albums.
